Description
Join us for the CBC-JHI Annual Lecture. Each year, the Jackman Humanities Institute partners with CBC Radio’s Ideas program on an annual public radio showcase focusing on humanities research at the JHI. This year we're excited to announce that Glen Coulthard, our 2023-24 Distinguished Visiting Indigenous Faculty Fellow, will give the lecture. CBC Ideas' Nahlah Ayed will join Glen for a discussion and audience members will be able to participate in a Q&A session. The lecture will be followed by a reception.
Glen Coulthard will explore the international cultural, political, and economic context that has always informed the Dene struggle over land and self-determination. From the worldly travels of Yamoria and Yamozha, through the efforts of the Sahtu to rectify their land and labour being used in the construction of the bombs dropped on Nagasaki and Hiroshima, to the Indian Brotherhood of the Northwest Territories international campaign against the Mackenzie Valley Pipeline in the 1970s, the Dene have always seen their land as connecting them to liberation efforts across the globe.
Glen Coulthard (Yellowknives Dene) is an associate professor at UBC (First Nations and Indigenous Studies and the Department of Political Science). Glen has written extensively about contemporary political theory, Indigenous thought and politics, and radical social and political thought (marxism, anarchism, post-colonialism). He is a co-founder of Dechinta Centre for Research and Learning, a decolonial, Indigenous land-based post-secondary program operating on his traditional territories in Denendeh (Northwest Territories).
