The breadth, depth and impact of research in the Faculty of Arts & Science is a major reason U of T consistently ranks as one of the leading research institutions in Canada and the world.
In the humanities, sciences and social sciences, our community members push boundaries of knowledge production through important individual, collaborative and interdisciplinary research endeavours across dozens of disciplines and research areas. Our researchers are recognized as national and international leaders in their fields and the societal relevance of research in Arts & Science is signified through partnerships with industry, governments and non-governmental organizations.
This work results in top national and international awards, competitive funding, as well as prestigious prizes and fellowships. More importantly, it results in innovations and discoveries that change the way we think about and understand the world and help us meet today’s social, economic and environmental challenges.

Celebrating Academic and Research Success
Our researchers stand proudly as recipients of prestigious awards and honours, a testament to their exceptional contributions and groundbreaking achievements in advancing knowledge and understanding. From 2010–23, our community's honours included, among others:
- 79 Royal Society of Canada Fellowships
- 16 Royal Society of Canada College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists Memberships
- 9 Canada Council for the Arts Killam Prizes
- 5 Gerhard Herzberg Canada Gold Medals for Science and Engineering
- 3 Canada Council for the Arts Molson Prizes
Research Statistics
Research excellence is a fundamental value of the Faculty of Arts & Science, and we are committed to supporting our community in this pursuit. Highlights from 2022–23 included:
- 182% increase in new successful funding applications, a difference of nearly $179 million, year over year
- 44% year-over-year increase in direct financial support for faculty member research activities
- 25% year-over-year increase in external research funding
- $109 million in external research funding received
- 497 postdoctoral fellows from 60 different countries
