Attendance Status

In the Faculty of Arts & Science, your attendance status refers to whether you are pursuing studies in a full-time or part-time capacity.

Your attendance status is based on the number of credits you are enrolled in. Attendance status is calculated for each session (Fall/Winter or Summer), not for each term. Transfer credits do not contribute to attendance status.

Your attendance status has an impact on what type of incidental fees you will pay. For students enrolled in Rotman Commerce, tuition fees are directly impacted by attendance status. For students pursuing Honours Bachelor of Arts or Honours Bachelor of Science degrees, attendance status does not impact academic tuition fees. See the Fees & Refunds page to learn how fees are calculated.

Full-Time or Part-Time Attendance Status

Attendance status is calculated for the entire session (Fall/Winter session or Summer session) and not for each term.

Full-time Status

In the Fall/Winter session, you will be a full-time student if you are enrolled in 3.0 credits or more during the session (September to April), no matter how many credits you are enrolled in each term. In the Summer session, you are a full-time student if you are enrolled in 1.5 credits or more during the session (May to August), regardless of your number of credits each term.

Session Minimum Credits for Full-Time Status
Fall/Winter 3.0 credits
Summer 1.5 credits

The number of credits that you take per term can impact OSAP or other financial aid. Contact your College Registrar’s Office if you wish to discuss how many credits to take each term. If you are an international student, you can also contact an International Student Immigration Advisor at the Centre for International Experience.

Work Terms

Arts & Science students completing paid full-time work terms that are a mandatory component of their academic program are considered full-time students. The current list of eligible opportunities is:

Part-time Status

In the Fall/Winter session, you will be a part-time student if you are enrolled in 2.5 credits or fewer during the session (September to April), no matter how many credits you are enrolled in each term. In the Summer session, you are a part-time student if you are enrolled in 0.5 or 1.0 credits during the session (May to August), regardless of your number of credits each term.

Session Maximum Credits for Part-Time Status
Fall/Winter 2.5 credits
Summer 1.0 credit

The number of credits that you take per term can impact OSAP or other financial aid. Contact your College Registrar’s Office if you wish to discuss how many credits to take each term.

As an international student, part-time attendance status at any time other than in your final term will impact your eligibility to work in Canada during your studies and for a Post-Graduation Work Permit. For more information, please visit the Centre for International Experience webpage about working in Canada and contact an International Student Immigration Advisor if you have further questions.

Although the Faculty of Arts & Science does not assess attendance status on a term basis but rather across a session (Fall/Winter or Summer), there may be cases where you may need an evaluation of attendance status by term. Students who are in 1.5 credits in one term in the Fall/Winter session (September to December or January to April) or 1.0 credit in one term in the Summer session (May and June or July and August) are enrolled in what is considered the equivalent of a full-time course load for that term, although their attendance status across the session is calculated as part-time.
