The Faculty of Arts & Science offers a variety of writing supports to graduate students and units under the direction of Daniel Aureliano Newman, Director, Graduate Writing Supports and Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream, Department of English.
Programming for Graduate Students
A&S programming for graduate writing support includes:
- Workshops on specific genres (e.g., grant proposals, literature reviews), style (e.g., strategies for clear scholarly writing) and process (e.g., revision strategies).
- Roundtables featuring a small number of faculty-member and/or graduate-student panellists, discussing a given topic (e.g., “Publishing Your Work as a Graduate Student”).
- Writing groups in which graduate students regularly share and offer feedback on works-in-progress, especially for dissertation and article writing.
- Peer-review sessions that allow students to get feedback on pre-circulated drafts of their writing (e.g., grant proposals, postdoctoral applications, cover letters).
- Writing camps, either biweekly virtual camp or two- to three-day in-person gatherings within units, both offering structured, focused writing time.
