The strength and impact of research in the Faculty of Arts & Science is a major reason U of T is Canada's leading research institution and consistently ranks in the top 25 in the world.
In the humanities, sciences and social sciences, our community members push boundaries of knowledge production through important individual, collaborative and interdisciplinary research endeavours across dozens of disciplines and research areas. Our researchers are recognized as national and international leaders in their fields and the societal relevance of research in Arts & Science is signified through partnerships with industry, governments and non-governmental organizations.
This work results in top national and international awards, competitive funding, as well as prestigious prizes and fellowships. More importantly, it results in exciting innovations and discoveries that change the way we think about and understand the world and which help us meet today’s social, economic and environmental challenges.

Research Statistics
Research excellence is a fundamental value of the Faculty of Arts & Science, and we are committed to supporting our community in this pursuit. Highlights from 2023–24 included:
- 1098 active funded research grants
- 811 new grant applications submitted to external sponsors
- $9 million in direct financial support for faculty member research activities
- $115 million in new successful funding applications
- $128 million in external research funding received
- 509 postdoctoral fellows from 60 different countries
- 47 Canada Research Chairs
- 28 University Professors
