The Royal Society of Chemistry has named Department of Chemistry professor Aaron Wheeler, editor-in-chief of Lab on a Chip — the premiere journal in the science and applications of microfluidics, broadly defined — published by the Royal Society of Chemistry. Wheeler’s term will begin in January 2021 and will follow the retirement of Professor Abe Lee of the University of California, Irvine.
"I’m honoured to be taking up the duties of editor-in-chief for Lab on a Chip. Perhaps uniquely relative to other journals, Lab on a Chip played a critical role in the birth and growth of a new field of research. Since the year 2000, the journal has been the ‘home’ for the best that the community has to offer, and I look forward to continuing that tradition going forward,” says Wheeler.
Wheeler’s research group is an active member of the Lab on a Chip research community, pushing the boundaries for how microfluidics and related technologies can be used to solve problems in chemistry, biology, and medicine. For example, in one recent report, the team described a technique for rapid loading of pin-pricks of blood onto microfluidic devices for point of care diagnostic assays, a topic of great importance in these days of the global pandemic.
“I am in awe of the diversity of topics that the Lab on a Chip community has made an impact in” Wheeler said to the Royal Society of Chemistry. ”Whether you study cells or gels, soil or oil, trees or bees, there is a Lab on a Chip for that. I can’t imagine a community that is more fun to be a part of.”
