A Very Canadian Coup in Haiti (20 Years Later)

When and Where

Monday, February 26, 2024 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm
William Doo Auditorium
45 Willcocks Street, Toronto, ON M5S 1C7

Description

On February 29, 2004, the Canadian military participated in the overthrow of the democratically elected government of Jean-Bertrand Aristide. Despite positioning itself as a peacekeeping nation concerned about human rights, this violent and colonial negotiation of Haiti's self-determination erased modest but important gains for the Haitian people and the now decimated Haitian state.

Join the Centre for Caribbean Studies to hear Professor Jemima Pierre, filmmaker and journalist Etant Dupain and activist and educator Jean St. Vil discuss how and why this coup continues to have catastrophic consequences for Haiti 20 years later.

The Centre for Caribbean Studies would like to thank its many generous co-sponsors: The New College Initiative Fund, The Black Student Engagement Fund, The Centre for the Study of the United States, African Studies, Political Science, Geography and Planning, History, The Centre for Diaspora and Transnational Studies, Critical Studies in Equity and Solidarity, Global Development Studies @ UTSC, the Caribbean Studies Student Union and the Caribbean Solidarity Network.
