Faculty Profile: Neil Bennett

Neil Bennett

Assistant Professor, Department of Earth Sciences

Neil Bennett.Neil Bennett is an assistant professor in the Department of Earth Sciences. He earned a PhD from the University of Toronto in 2013, and subsequently spent three years as a Carnegie Postdoctoral Fellow at the Geophysical Lab in Washington, DC. Bennett followed that with some time working in the EdTech industry, and for a startup producing wind-powered drones for oceanographic data collection.

Since returning to the University of Toronto, Bennett has been studying early planetary formation processes, particularly their isotopic effects. He has also begun experiments aimed at understanding the controls over critical metal enrichment in nature. The common theme to Bennett’s research is the use of high temperature and pressure experiments to simulate processes on Earth and other planetary bodies. The same equipment can also be used to synthesize novel materials, providing an excellent opportunity to work collaboratively across departments at U of T.
