The Vice-Dean, College Relations is responsible for maintaining communication, coordination and alignment of strategy and operations between the Dean’s Office and the seven vibrant Arts & Science colleges: Innis, New, St. Michael’s, Trinity, University, Victoria and Woodsworth.

Areas of Responsibility

  • Facilitates communication between academic and administrative leaders in the Dean’s Office and colleges
  • Guiding principles for A&S in managing college relationships 
  • Monitors impact of service level changes 
  • Works closely with the Associate Dean, Student Affairs to provide an outstanding student experience across the Faculty and the colleges
  • Chairs or co-chairs committees and working groups related to college operations, e.g., Ancillary Services; Administrative HR; Residences; etc., as needed 

Biography

Professor Markus Stock was appointed Vice-Dean, College Relations for a two-year term starting October 1, 2022.

Since joining the University of Toronto in 2005, Professor Stock has amassed a notable record of service in academic leadership and governance. He currently serves as the 17th Principal of University College and was the Chair of the Department of Germanic Languages & Literatures (2013–19) with a cross-appointment to the Centre for Medieval Studies.

He has served on numerous Faculty and University Committees, including the Academic Board, the Academic Policies & Programs Committee ⁠— where he served as Vice-Chair from 2017–19 ⁠— the President’s International Council for Europe, the Advisory Committee for U of T Libraries, and the Student Experience Working Group, among many others. He has also served the sector as member and Chair of SSHRC Connection Grants Adjudication Committees and as Academic Colleague on the Council of Ontario Universities.

Professor Stock holds a PhD in Medieval German Literature from the University of Göttingen (2000). His SSHRC-funded research and his teaching are situated in medieval German literatures, manuscript studies and digital philology.

He has authored, edited or co-edited a dozen books and special journal issues, including, most recently, serving as the co-editor of the journal issues Commenting and Commentary as an Interpretive Mode in Medieval and Early Modern Europe (2022, with Christina Lechtermann), Digital Curation (2021, with Carrie Smith), and Indigenous and German Studies (2019, with Renae Watchman and Carrie Smith). His digital edition of the works of 13th-century poet Burkhard von Hohenfels was published in 2020.

Professor Stock held visiting professorships at the University of Freiburg (2008) and Harvard University (2009) as well as two research fellowships at the University of Freiburg (2012 and 2017); he was also an Erasmus Mundus Scholar at the Universities of Porto and Palermo (2013–14) and co-editor of Seminar: A Journal of Germanic Studies (2017–22). He currently serves as President of German Studies Canada (2021–23).

Professor Stock will continue serving as Principal of University College while also taking on this new role.
