If you have written an Arts & Science final exam on the St. George campus within the last six months and you believe there may have been a marking error, you may request a course mark recalculation and/or a reread of your exam.
Recheck of Course Mark Calculation (free)
If you think there may have been a mathematical error with the calculation of your final exam marks or the calculation of your term work marks, you can request a course mark recalculation. It is strongly recommended that you see your marked exam before requesting a recheck, so that you can determine whether a mistake was actually made. To see your exam, you can either request an exam copy (for a fee) or book a free exam viewing appointment.
Note: A recheck of a course mark calculation is only a review of the mathematical calculation of your grade. It does not involve the review or remarking of any individual course work, exams or other course components that have already been graded.
- To request a review of course work other than a final exam held during a faculty final exam period, please contact your instructor or the academic department offering the course.
- In the case of a course mark recalculation request, the academic unit will ensure that the exam mark, along with any the marks you were given for any other term work, have been added and calculated correctly.
How to Request a Recheck of a Course Mark Calculation
To request a course mark calculation recheck, complete a
Course Mark Calculation Recheck Request Form and send it to exams.artsci@utoronto.ca, or submit a printed copy in person at the Office of the Faculty Registrar (100 St. George St., Room 1006).
Important considerations:
- Recheck of a course mark calculation may result in a raised mark, a lowered mark or no change.
- The results of a course mark calculation recheck are considered to be final.
Reread of Faculty Final Examination ($38.50)
If you think your exam may have been incorrectly marked, you can request a reread of your final exam. In this case, you must first see your marked exam, either through the purchase of an electronic exam copy or by completing a supervised in-person exam viewing appointment. After you have purchased an exam copy or completed an exam viewing, you can request a final exam reread online through the A&S Online Services website.
Important considerations:
- The fee for a final exam reread request is $38.50 per exam. If there is a change to the course grade as a result of a reread request, the exam reread fee will be refunded.
- If you received a failing mark on your final exam, your exam has already been reread at the time of marking.
- Final exam reread requests may result in a raised mark, a lowered mark or no change.
- The results of a final exam reread are considered to be final.
How to Request a Reread of a Final Exam
To request a reread of a final exam, visit the A&S Online Services website, explain the reason you are requesting a reread and pay the fees.
The request form is an opportunity to connect directly with the faculty member who will be reviewing your exam. To help them understand why you are requesting a final exam reread, be as precise as you can about where you think an error has occurred. For example, instead of saying “I think my exam was marked too harshly,” or “I deserve more marks to get into another program,” note specific instances of disagreement and cite evidence from the course to back up your assertions. Even though you may not have access to your course materials while viewing your exam, do your best to show that your answers are substantially correct.
Process and Timeline for Final Exam Reread Requests
Once you have successfully submitted the online request and payment, the academic unit and instructor will be given access to the required documents within 3-5 business days. The academic unit will then send your exam to an instructor for rereading. In circumstances where the original instructor is not available, the departmental chair will select an instructor with an equivalent level of knowledge of the subject matter.
After your exam reread has been completed, you will be able to view the results along with any additional comments from the instructor when you log into the A&S Online Services website. If there is a change to your course mark after the reread process, it will be reflected in ACORN. You will receive an email from the A&S Online Services system at each step of the process to advise you of the status of your request.
If you have any questions concerning your submitted request(s), you can log into the A&S Online Services website, click on your request and then select "Leave a Message".
Refund
If there is a change to the course grade as a result of an exam reread, the exam reread fee and the exam copy fee (if applicable) will be refunded. Please note that refunds are processed to the original form of payment.
