If you have written an Arts & Science final exam on the St. George campus within the last six months and you believe there has been a marking error, you may request a course mark calculation recheck and/or a reread of your exam.
Recheck of Course Mark Calculation (free)
If you think there’s been an error with addition on your exam or in the calculation of your term work, you can request a recheck of your course mark calculation. A recheck may be requested with or without first requesting an exam copy or a viewing appointment, but we strongly recommend that you view your marked exam before requesting a recheck.
Note: A recheck of a course mark calculation is a review of the mathematical calculation of your grade and does not involve the review of any individual graded course work, exam or components.
- To request a review of course work other than a final exam held during a final exam period, please contact your instructor or the academic department offering the course.
- For a review of a final exam held during a final exam period, see below.
Reread of Faculty Final Examination ($37.75)
If you think your exam has been incorrectly marked, you can request a reread of your final exam. In this case, you must first see your marked exam, either through the purchase of an exam copy or by completing a supervised exam viewing appointment. After you have purchased an exam copy or completed an exam viewing, you can follow the steps below to request an exam reread.
Submitting a Request
To request a course mark calculation recheck or an exam reread, fill out the Exam Reread and Recheck Form and send it to exams.artsci@utoronto.ca or submit a printed copy in person at the Office of the Faculty Registrar (100 St. George St., Room 1006).
Payment
The fee for a reread request is $37.75 per exam (fees effective May 1, 2024). This fee will be refunded if the mark is changed as a result of the request. Payment methods are as follows:
- In person: Debit card or credit card
- By email: Payment may be made by any major credit card if you write the card number and expiry date on your form. In order to protect your financial information, please ensure that you use your encrypted University of Toronto email address to submit your form.
What to Write
The reread or recheck form is a chance to speak directly with the faculty member who will be looking at your exam again. To help them understand why a course mark calculation recheck or an exam reread may be necessary, be as precise as you can about where you think an error has occurred. For example, instead of saying “I think my exam was marked too harshly,” or “I deserve more marks to get into another program,” note specific instances of disagreement and cite evidence from the course to back up your assertions. Even though you may not have access to your course materials while viewing your exam, do your best to show that your answers are substantially correct.
Please note that a course mark calculation recheck or an exam reread may result in a raised mark, a lowered mark or no change.
Process and Timeline
Once your form has been processed and your payment (if necessary) has been received, the form and your exam will be sent to the department for rechecking or rereading within three business days. You will receive an email advising you that the exam has been forwarded to the department.
In the case of a course mark calculation recheck request, the department will ensure that the exam marks, along with any other term work, have been added and calculated correctly.
For an exam reread request, the department will send your exam to a faculty member for rereading. In circumstances where the original instructor is not available, the departmental chair will select a faculty member with knowledge of the subject matter.
If there is a change to your mark after an appeal process, it will be reflected in ACORN and this will be your first notification. Once the department has returned the exam to the Office of the Faculty Registrar, you will be sent an email with the results, along with any additional comments from the instructor who reread your exam.
If you haven’t received any response within six weeks, please email exams.artsci@utoronto.ca to inquire about the status of your request.
Refund
If your mark is changed as a result of an exam reread, the exam reread fee and/or the exam copy fee (if applicable) will be refunded. Please note that refunds are processed to the original form of payment.
