We strive to provide inclusive services that enable all students to thrive and succeed in ASIP, including those from equity-deserving groups. We encourage all interested students to apply to the program.

Admission Criteria

The ASIP stream of each program is limited enrolment. Students must submit a supplementary application.

Holistic admissions criteria will form the basis for admission, with the following criteria being considered:

  • Demonstrated leadership, communication, teamwork and community-building qualities
  • Evidence of motivation to learn and develop
  • Resilience and ability to overcome challenges
  • Sense of self and sense of responsibility, ability to learn from mistakes

The application package will consist of the student’s resume and responses to four short-answer non-cognitive questions exploring the above qualities.

The ASIP program’s mission is to help students prepare for professional life through work-integrated learning. We strive to provide inclusive services that enable all students to thrive and succeed in the program, including those from equity-deserving groups. We encourage all interested students to apply to the program.

General Application Instructions

  • The application portal will be open only during the application periods listed below.
  • All application steps need to be completed by the specified deadlines (see Key Dates below) for your ASIP application to be considered.
  • The application package will consist of a supplementary application and your resume.
    • Supplementary application: Includes basic student information (student number, program, etc.) and responses to four short answer non-cognitive questions. Your answers must come from your own experiences and be written completely by you. You will also be asked to provide the name and contact information of a person who can verify the validity of your responses, if required.
    • Resume: We strongly encourage you to consult the Resume and Cover Letter Toolkit prepared by Career Exploration and Education and have them review your resume (you can book an appointment on CLNx). Please upload your resume in PDF format and label the document with your UTORid (not student number).
  • To avoid losing your work on the internet browser, we recommend you work on your responses in a separate document so you can edit, spell check and save your drafts. When you are ready, copy and paste your responses into the application to submit.
  • If you encounter any technical difficulties, please contact asip@utoronto.ca.

Frequently Asked Questions

GPA is not considered as part of the ASIP selection criteria for students who enter the program in their second year of study (Year 2). Eligibility requirements for ASIP can be found on the ASIP Programs & Eligibility page.

Yes, international students from eligible programs may participate. ASIP fees are the same for both domestic and international students. International students must obtain a co-op or intern work permit prior to their first work term. Upon entry to ASIP, students are provided a letter proving their registration in the program that can be submitted to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) as part of their co-op work term application. Please note there may be some limitations. International students, for example, are not eligible for government-funded wage subsidy programs or some positions in the Federal government.
A SIN is not required for the ASIP application itself; however, students will need a Canadian SIN and a co-op work permit by the time their first work placement begins.
Typically, students must be going into Year 2 (4.0 - 8.5 credits completed) as a full-time student in the upcoming Fall/Winter session to be eligible for the ASIP stream. However, we understand that some students who will be starting their second year of study may surpass the 8.5 credits threshold due to their transfer credits (whether from secondary school or postsecondary studies); we will consider Year 2 students who have additional transfer credits (up to 10 credits total) completed at the time of ASIP entry.
We will be using holistic admissions criteria to form the basis for admission to ASIP, so any prior work experience, volunteer, extracurricular and/or community involvement will be helpful to your supplementary application. More information on the admission criteria can be found on the How to Apply to ASIP page. To further gain experience, we recommend getting involved on campus – for example, join a student club, apply for a Work Study position, volunteer. Gaining experience will help develop your resume which will support you in both applying to ASIP and also in securing a work term. We recommend you connect with Career Exploration & Education to learn more about resources and opportunities available to you. Not sure where to start? Book a 20-minute online Career Start appointment. We also recommend checking out the Centre for Community Partnerships as they offer a variety of co-curricular experiential opportunities.
For academic units where students in either a Major or a Specialist can apply to ASIP, a Specialist program will not be regarded higher than a Major program.
Unfortunately, you will not be able to reapply the following year as Year 3 entry is limited to students who enrolled in an ASIP eligible program in the summer after second year.
