Are you a PhD candidate interested in learning more about university administration?

The Arts & Science Doctoral Internship Program in university administration (AS-DIP) is a new work-integrated learning program that offers A&S doctoral students the opportunity to work part-time and get exposure to the operations of U of T administrative units.

Each internship allows for 120 hours of work, including 110 hours of unit-specific work and 10 hours of professional-development programming.

Why should you seek an AS-DIP internship?

As an AS-DIP intern, you will gain training, knowledge and marketable experience in university administration by working in units that value the perspective and expertise your doctoral education brings. Units include teaching and learning, research services, academic governance, strategic planning, student services and faculty development.

This hands-on exposure to university administration is valuable for pursuing academic and non-academic career pathways, especially careers related to higher education. By engaging in cohorted professional-development sessions, you will also gain helpful insight into potential career paths in higher education.

How does an internship work?

All PhD interns are paid a set rate ($26 per hour plus vacation and benefits) to complete a 120-hour internship between January and May.

PhD interns work up to 110 hours in an administrative unit. They must also participate in 10 hours of concurrent cohorted professional-development programming offered by the Arts & Science Office of Graduate Professional Development & Student Success.

Cohorted programming takes you through the process of learning from and sharing your experience in university administration. As part of this programming, you will deliver a final presentation to your peers in the internship cohort, enabling all participating PhDs to gain broader exposure to the higher education landscape.
