Radu Craiu named Institute of Mathematical Statistics Fellow

Radu Craiu, chair of the Department of Statistical Sciences, has been named a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (IMS) — the premier organization of mathematical statisticians and probabilists in the world.

Craiu was honoured with the prestigious award for his fundamental contributions to the methodology and theory of Markov chain Monte Carlo, diverse investigations into statistical uses of copulas, significant insights into statistical genetics and false discovery rates, editorship of several research journals, mentorship of numerous research students and his leadership in the unprecedented expansion of his department's research compliment.

Craiu studied mathematics at the University of Bucharest and received his PhD from the Department of Statistics at the University of Chicago in 2001. Craiu received the 2016 SSC-CRM Prize in Statistics and is an elected member of the International Statistical Institute.

To be named an IMS fellow is an impressive honour. Each person nominated for a fellowship is assessed by a committee of peers. In 2020, after reviewing 73 nominations, 35 were selected for fellowship.

"I am delighted to receive this honour and to join the ranks of other IMS fellows," said Craiu.

Created in 1935, the Institute of Mathematical Statistics is a member organization that fosters the development and dissemination of the theory and applications of statistics and probability. The IMS has 3,500 active members throughout the world. Approximately 12 per cent of the current IMS membership has earned the status of fellowship.
