Indigenous Studies Students' Union powwow returns for 2021

June 18, 2021 by A&S News

After being among the first events at U of T to be postponed in March 2020 amid growing concerns around the COVID-19 pandemic, the Honouring Our Students Pow Wow presented by the Indigenous Studies Students’ Union (ISSU) returns this weekend in an online format.

The celebration, streamed as a YouTube Premiere, will include dancing, drumming, teachings, contests, giveaways and more, and will feature head dancers John Hupfield and Cedar Smoke, special guests and Elders.

Saturday’s event is the latest in a series of annual celebrations that began in 2017 when a group of students at U of T approached the ISSU and noted that there was no powwow for them that they could call their own. The March 2017 event was the university’s first major, arena-style powwow in decades.

Visit the ISSU Honouring Our Students Pow Wow 2021 website for full details and to watch the livestream beginning at 12 pm on Saturday, June 19.
