From a Day of the Dead celebration, to supermassive black holes, to trekking across Peru — many of the stories from the Faculty of Arts & Science in 2025 were told through captivating images. Here are six of the best, showcasing the achievements and experiences of students, faculty and other members of our community.

Día de Muertos at Vic: A&S students receive a living lesson in Mexican culture

In October, Victoria College came alive with poetry, music and dancing to celebrate Dia de Muertos or Day of the Dead — a holiday gaining popularity outside of Mexico.

New images from the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), an international collaboration involving several University of Toronto astronomers and astrophysicists, have shown important details about the magnetic fields of the supermassive black hole at the centre of the galaxy M87.

Celebrating 50 years of excellence at Arts & Science’s Cinema Studies Institute

In 2025, Innis College celebrated 50 years of excellence in research and teaching, and shone a spotlight on the faculty members and alumni who’ve made important contributions to academia and entertainment.

Dictionary of Canadian Biography series reveals histories of Black people enslaved in Upper Canada

Chloe Cooley’s enslavement in the colonial era of present-day Ontario was a catalyst in the introduction of the Act to Limit Slavery in Upper Canada. Hers is one of seven new histories added to the Dictionary of Canadian Biography
