Jan Doering.Jan Doering’s research is situated in two, sometimes overlapping areas: one, social control and conflict in urban neighborhoods, and two, individual experiences and responses in relation to discrimination.

Before joining the University of Toronto, Doering was an associate professor in the Department of Sociology at McGill University. His recent research has appeared in Sociological Science, Social Problems, Urban Affairs Review and Ethnic and Racial Studies.

Doering’s first book, Us Versus Them, which examines conflicts over policing and social control in Chicago, was published by Oxford University Press in 2020. He holds a PhD from the University of Chicago and has received funding from the National Science Foundation, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council and Les Fonds de recherche du Québec.
