2023–24 External Review

The University of Toronto commissions external reviews of Faculties as part of its regular cycle of quality assurance.

Through a consultative and broad–based process that began in fall 2022 and continued through summer 2023, we reflected upon our collective challenges and achievements and evaluated the Faculty’s academic and administrative performance.

As a key part of the review process, the Faculty prepared a comprehensive 2023 A&S self-study (available in SharePoint, along with supporting documents, to all with UTORID) to serve as the main reference document for the review. The self-study is a retrospective document structured by the review’s terms of reference. It documents the Faculty’s progress in achieving its academic mission and in implementing its 2020–25 Academic Plan, Leveraging Our Strengths.

The Provost appointed a team of three external reviewers from peer institutions to undertake an assessment of the Faculty of Arts & Science. The reviewers will perform a site visit on October 23–25, 2023, meeting with students, faculty, staff and academic administrators within Arts & Science, as well as senior University administrators and cognate deans.

After the site visit, the reviewers will provide a report in relation to Arts & Science undergraduate and graduate education, research, planning, organization and resources, our relationships with other University units, and our societal impact. Subsequently, the Dean will prepare an administrative response to the review report in consultation with A&S stakeholders. The review process will conclude with the review report and Dean’s response being submitted to university governance.
