Melanie Woodin, dean of the Faculty of Arts & Science, has been honoured by her alma mater — the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary — as an outstanding alumna of distinction.

Dean Woodin — who earned her PhD at the school in 2001 — was recognized for being “an innovative educator leading the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Arts & Science.”

The committee selected Woodin for “her educational leadership and dedication to enriching the student experience throughout her career.”

As dean, Woodin has led transformational initiatives including establishing an internship program that provides work experience and professional development training.

She has also been a strong advocate for interdisciplinary collaboration and innovative teaching and has established new programs that address contemporary topics, including certificates in Black Canadian Studies, and sustainability.

Woodin and the other two honourees this year — Dr. Adam Kirton, a clinician-scientist whose research strives to improve outcomes for pediatric stroke patients and Dr. Rabiya Jalil, a family physician who serves vulnerable populations — will be celebrated in Calgary on May 6, 2022.
