Several Arts & Science graduate students and postdoctoral fellows were among the many emerging scholars recently named when Canada’s three federal research granting agencies announced the latest recipients of Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships and Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships.

Awarded jointly by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), the investment enables promising researchers to further develop research excellence and build global links under the mentorship of research leaders.

The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships provide research funding to the very best postdoctoral applicants, both nationally and internationally, who will positively contribute to Canada’s economic, social and research-based growth. Valued at $70,000 per year, for two years, the fellowships allow researchers to conduct ambitious fieldwork and devote substantial time to work without the financial pressures that might typically arise.

The 2020 Banting Fellows include:

  • Gabriel dos Passos Gomes, Chemistry and Computer Science (NSERC)
  • John Mackereth, Astronomy & Astrophysics (NSERC)
  • Joshua Speagle, Astronomy & Astrophysics and Statistical Sciences (NSERC)
  • Katja Kasimatis, Ecology & Evolutionary Biology (NSERC)

The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships help Canadian institutions attract and retain highly qualified doctoral students in the sciences, social sciences and humanities. Chosen for their demonstration of academic excellence, leadership and research potential, recipients are awarded $50,000 per year, for up to three years of study.

The 2020 Vanier Scholars include:

  • Danijar Hafner, Computer Science (NSERC)
  • Clovis Hamel Ascanio, Mathematics (NSERC)
