David Waterhouse of East Asian studies, received the Order of the Rising Sun from the government of Japan, for his contributions to increasing Canadian understanding of Japanese culture.

Department of Computer Science & Department of Mathematics

Benjamin Rossman of mathematics and computer science and Jacob Tsimerman of mathematics were invited to speak at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Rio de Janeiro, in August. An invitation to speak at this gathering is considered to be a major honour and a prestigious recognition of research accomplishments.

Department for the Study of Religion

Simon Coleman was selected to give the Henry Myers Lecture sponsored by the Royal Anthropological Institute. This is a distinguished lectureship, and great honour recognizing Professor Coleman’s reputation as an anthropologist.

David Novak delivered the prestigious Gifford Lectures at the University of Aberdeen. Established in 1888, the Gifford Lecturers have been recognized as pre-eminent thinkers in their respective fields.

Christina Kramer has received an honorary doctorate degree from the Saints Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje, Macedonia recognizing her contributions to the development of Macedonian language, literature, and culture on a global level.

Department of Chemistry

Mark Lautens is the winner of the prestigious Henry Marshall Tory Medal from the Royal Society of Canada in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the field of chemistry with particular emphasis on work carried out in the past eight years.

Department of English & Department for the Study of Religion

Cheryl Suzack of English and Kevin O’Neill of religion have been elected Members of the Royal Society of Canada College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists.

Department of Mathematics

Jacob Tsimerman won the 2017 André-Aisenstadt Prize from the Centre de recherches mathématiques for his remarkably creative and insightful work at the interface of transcendence theory, analytic number theory and arithmetic geometry.

Robert Jerrard has been elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.

Candace Kruttschnitt has been elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.

Department of Philosophy & Department of Psychology

Cheryl Misak  of philosophy and Morris Moscovitch of psychology were appointed University Professors – U of T’s highest academic rank, recognizing exceptional scholarly achievement and preeminence in a particular field of knowledge, and comprising no more than 2 per cent of the tenured faculty.
