Professor John Magee joined the University of Toronto and Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies as an Associate Professor in 1992; since 1999 he has served as Professor of Classics and Medieval Studies. Professor Magee’s research focuses on late ancient philosophy and philosophical commentators, as well as on ancient and medieval textual criticism. He served as Acting Chair of the Department of Classics and as Director of the Centre for Medieval Studies. Professor Magee was appointed Vice Dean, Faculty & Academic Life in 2015.
The Vice-Dean, Faculty & Academic Life works with various partners within the Faculty to manage the human and financial resources that sustain the Faculty’s academic programs and support academic searches, appointments, and reviews. The Vice-Dean also acts on behalf of the Faculty in managing collective agreements, bargaining, and grievances with trade unions and the Faculty Association within the University.
During his tenure as Vice-Dean, Professor Magee counts among his accomplishments his contribution toward the development of a more productive working relationship with CUPE 3902, one with widely felt benefits for graduate students, the Union, and the University’s administration alike; also, the streamlining of processes relating to annual one-time-only and summer funding for academic units within the Faculty. Professor Magee will serve in this role until June 2019.
