A&S Minimum Financial Support Package

Graduate units in the Faculty of Arts & Science provide a minimum level of financial support to all graduate students in the funded cohort. For 2023–24, the A&S minimum financial support package will be $20,000 ($20,500 in the sciences) plus tuition and fees.1 Funding begins in the first session of registration in the funded program.2

A&S ensures students will receive fellowship income to bridge the difference between external awards and/or income derived from paid experience (teaching and research assistantships) and the minimum financial support package established by the faculty.

In 2021, A&S announced a three-year increase that will see the minimum level of financial support increase each year through 2024–25.

In 2022–23, the minimum level of financial support increased by $500. In the fall 2022, A&S announced a $500 top-up payment (above the minimum level of financial support) to all graduate students in the funded cohort for the 2022–23 academic year.

In 2023–24, the minimum level of financial support increased by $1,000 to $20,000 ($20,500 in the sciences).

In 2024–25, the minimum level of financial support will increase by $1,750 to $21,750 ($22,250 in the sciences).

*Fees shown are for domestic PhD programs. The 2021–22 through 2023–24 tuition & fees figures are actual for St. George campus. For 2024–25 the tuition & fees amount is an estimate.

The foregoing minimum amounts apply to all students in the funded cohort. The final total will vary, depending on tuition and fees, which are based in part on domestic or international status and campus affiliation. The A&S minimum financial support package covers tuition and fees for all students in the funded cohort, regardless of their domestic or international status, the incidental fees charged by the campus with which they are affiliated at the start of the academic year1 and individual student decisions on optional incidental fees.

Individual graduate units are welcome to provide enhanced packages. Many graduate units offer packages that exceed the A&S minimum level of financial support.

Student income often exceeds the A&S minimum level of financial support and may do so significantly in graduate units that have abundant TA opportunities or high-value RA-ships.

1. Campus affiliation fees are St. George campus fees by default, unless the student has either (a) affiliated with U of T Mississauga prior to the issuance of funding letters in September or (b) or formally switched campus affiliation and notified the graduate administrator by October 31.

2. Funding commences in the first session of registration in the program, unless program design dictates otherwise. If program funding commences in year one, students cannot defer funding to a subsequent session or year.
