Lisa Strug
Professor, Department of Statistical Sciences and the Department of Computer Science, and Senior Scientist, The Hospital for Sick Children
Lisa Strug is a Professor in the Departments of Statistical Sciences and Computer Science, and the Dalla Lana School of Public Health. She is also a Senior Scientist in the Genetics and Genome Biology program at the Hospital for Sick Children, the Associate Director of the Centre for Applied Genomics, and the Director of CANSSI Ontario at U of T — the Ontario Regional Centre of the Canadian Statistical Sciences Institute.
Strug's research focuses on the genetics of complex traits and the development of novel statistical approaches to identifying genetic contributors to human disease — with particular emphasis on tools tailored to the identification of modifier genes. Most of her research has been in the area of identifying modifier genes in cystic fibrosis, as well as in the genetics of Rolandic Epilepsy.
As Director of CANSSI Ontario, she oversees the development of programs — including grants, training, workshops and seminars — designed to support and enable interdisciplinary research and multidisciplinary collaborations. She also leads the Institute’s efforts in building communities and relationships within U of T and beyond that are centred on statistical and data-intensive research.
Strug received her bachelor of science in statistics from the University of Toronto; her master of science in biostatistics from Johns Hopkins University; and her PhD in biostatistics from U of T. She was a postdoctoral fellow in statistical genetics at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health and an Assistant Professor at Columbia University in the Departments of Psychiatry and Biostatistics.
