Spanish and Portuguese

Spanish and Portuguese are among the world's most widely spoken languages. They share a Latin origin, and through their histories and current uses they intersect with diverse cultures in Europe, the Americas, Africa and Asia. In addition to instruction in Spanish and Portuguese, our programs explore the literatures and cultures of the Hispanic and Lusophone worlds. The study of Hispanic and Portuguese linguistics offers special focus on the structure and diversity of Spanish and Portuguese languages.

Advice for First Year

Introductory courses in Spanish and Portuguese are available for first year students with no prior knowledge of the languages. Students with Grade 12 (grades 10, 11, & 12) Spanish should enrol in SPA 220Y1.

Students who have studied Spanish before joining the University should take the online placement test (contact the department for details). Students with previous experience of Portuguese should consult with the Associate Chair for Portuguese, Prof. Manuela Marujo.
