Max Gluskin House: Building for a Competitive Edge

In response to an urgent need to provide a home for all Economics students and faculty for the first time ever, U of T designated the restoration, renovation and expansion of 150 St. George Street, the site of the Department of Economics, as a top capital priority.

economics buildingOfficially opened on October 16, 2008, Max Gluskin House is providing one of the world's leading economics departments with an architecturally stunning facility. The new complex joins the original Victorian and Georgian Revival structures to a spacious, light-filled, modern addition that elegantly reflects the department's long tradition of, and international reputation for, producing influential, cutting-edge scholarship.

By providing integrated classroom, meeting, work, office and social space, Max Gluskin House is a vibrant locus for critical discussion and advanced learning in economics, business and finance.

It is helping ensure the department's international competitiveness in securing top students and faculty well into the future. And it is playing a significant role in fulfilling the University's commitment to provide the best academic experience possible to our students.

In 2009, the Max Gluskin House was recognized by the PUG Awards (The People's Choice Awards for Architecture) in the commercial and institutional category, coming in second place to the newly renovated Art Gallery of Ontario.

Goal Update:

  • In 2006, our distinguished alumnus Ira Gluskin (a 6T4 commerce and finance graduate) and his wife Maxine Granovsky-Gluskin gave a leadership gift of $3.5 million to name Max Gluskin House, in honour of Ira's father (also a commerce and finance graduate).

  • In 2007, U of T faculty and staff, family and friends, joined together to raise $50,000 and named the faculty-staff lounge in memory of Professor Michael Berkowitz, the former chair of the Department of Economics.

  • Special Alumni Appeal: In 2008, Harold Wolkin jumpstarted a campaign to name the Alumni Heritage Reception Parlour with a gift of $25,000 — and he is challenging other Economics Alumni to contribute to reach a grand total of $100,000! Individuals who give $1,827 on an annual basis will become members of the Presidents' Circle, with a great array of benefits.
