Stevo Todorcevic, Canada Research Chair in the Department of Mathematics, has been awarded the 2012 CRM-Fields-PIMS Prize in recognition of his exceptional achievement in the mathematical sciences and his contributions to the advancement of mathematical scholarship, particularly through the striking originality and technical brilliance of his work. Todorcevic has a reputation as a world leader in set theory the branch of mathematics that studies collections of objects particularly combinatorial set theory and its connections with topology and analysis.

Awarded annually for research achievements in the mathematical sciences, the prize is the premier Canadian award for mathematicians, awarded jointly by the three Canadian mathematics institutes, the Centre de recherches mathématiques (CRM), the Fields Institute, and the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences.

This is the eighth time a faculty member from the University of Toronto has won the annual award, either solely or jointly, in the past 18 years. From 1995 to 1999, the University of Toronto won the award four out of five times.
