In the days since the fatal shootings in Scarborough, Toronto's been on-guard about violence issues in the city. Professor of criminology, Scott Wortley wrote an op-ed for the Toronto Star on the topic, saying "Toronto could eventually experience American-style crime and violence."

Wortley wrote about how to begin to address and solve the problem: "The problem is that while law enforcement strategies may effectively deal with known criminals, they do not adequately deal with the social factors that produce these criminals. They do not address the root causes of crime and violence — poverty, social inequality, alienation and hopelessness."
