A team led by David Law at the University of Toronto's Dunlap Institute for Astronomy & Astrophysics has discovered a spiral galaxy, dubbed BX442, that appears to have formed a billion years before other spirals.
"When we saw it we were astounded," Law told New Scientist. "Common wisdom was that these things don't exist."
