Dvira Segal of Chemistry, Michael Brudno of Computer Science, and Spyros Alexakis, Larry Guth and Balázs Szegedy of Mathematics have each been awarded a Sloan Research Fellowship by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. With three recipients, the Department of Mathematics has set a U of T record for the number of Sloan Fellowships going to a single department. Of 19 Sloans awarded to mathematicians this year, three went to U of T, two went to Stony Brook University and 14 other universities got one each. The Sloan Fellowships provide support and recognition to young scientists and are designed to identify those who show the most promise of making fundamental contributions to new knowledge.

Fifty undergraduate and two graduate students in Arts & Science are among the winners of 2010 Gordon Cressy Student Leadership Awards, established in 1994 by the University of Toronto Alumni Association (UTAA) and the Division of University Advancement in order to recognize students who have made outstanding extra-curricular contributions to their college, faculty or school, or to the university as a whole. The awards will be presented at a ceremony in April. Full details about the awards and this list of recipients can be found on the UTAA website.
