Research Excursion Program (REP 398H/Y Courses)

The Research Excursions Program (REP) is designed to provide small groups of students completing their second or third year the opportunity to contribute to faculty research in an off-campus setting, in Canada or abroad. These group projects are based on experiential learning and take place under the continuous supervision of an Arts & Science faculty member. Funding is provided by to support student expenses only. Support will be provided for ensuring student eligibility and safety abroad requirements are met. Proposals are normally funded in the range of $5,000 - $15,000. 

  • Please note: In support of International Opportunities, the Dean’s Office has partnered with the Professional and International Programs (PIP) office at Woodsworth College to provide integrated logistical support. The International Programs Coordinator can assist with booking and arranging for payment, whenever possible, for transportation, accommodation, and venue admission.

Proposal Requirements

Many departments currently have provisions for independent reading and research courses at the 300- and 400- level. The REP is related to that existing concept, but differs in the following way:

  1. It is intended for research projects that provide continuously supervised practical experience for two or more students in an off-campus setting.
  2. “Supervised” means that a continuously appointed Arts & Science (St. George) faculty member is supervising the students on-site for the entire duration of the project. The expectation is that the project would usually be connected to the faculty member’s own research interests.
  3. The practical or experiential component can take a variety of forms, such as research or learning in archives, laboratories, libraries, field camps, etc., but not in a lab or classroom at another university (that is covered by our exchange programs). Possible off-campus settings include (but are not limited to): a field site not covered by our existing field course arrangements (for instance, an opportunity to participate in an archaeological project in Canada or abroad); an archive/laboratory/museum/research centre in Canada or abroad.
  4. The off-campus research component will normally run within the May-August period, when both faculty and students can make the time commitments necessary; work may continue during the subsequent Fall term, but it is expected that REP course mark will be submitted to the Faculty no later than mid-October. REPs are academic courses, students must be registered for the Summer term: tuition applies. 
  5. The students will normally be highly motivated, responsible, and will have completed a minimum of nine FCEs but no more than sixteen FCEs by the time they begin the REP. (Thus, for a full-time student, the research project would normally be undertaken following their second or third year of study.)  Fourth year students can participate if they have sixteen FCEs or fewer before the REP starts, however REPs must include a majority of students having between 9 and 14 FCE. The faculty supervisors will choose the students in much the same way as they do for the 299Ys, and 399Ys. Student eligibility will then be verified by FAS prior to enrolment
  6. The REP cannot be combined with a research project for which the student is being paid (the principle being that a student cannot receive both payment AND academic credit for the same project).
  7. The REP will normally have a program-specific designator, such as ANT, CLA, VIC, CSB, etc. It is eligible to count towards program completion if the program sponsor (Department or Program) so chooses.
  8. The REP will receive funding allocation to cover students’ modest travel and living expenses, as approved by the International Opportunities Committee. All participating students must be Arts & Science (St. George) students in good standing.

Proposal Submission Process


Proposals should be submitted to your department chair, program director or designate for approval.

Applicants must be faculty with continuous appointment to the Faculty of Arts & Science (St. George).

A complete application form forwarded from the chair/director/designate will be considered eligible by your department/program. Eligible proposals should be submitted via e-mail to fas.international@utoronto.ca no later than November 24, 2017. Forms submitted directly from an instructor will be returned to the sender.

2017-18 Timetable

Before Nov. 24
Faculty members submit their completed project proposals to their chair or designate for approval by the departmental deadline.
By Nov. 
Units forward, on-line, all project descriptions to fas.international@utoronto.ca.
Early Dec. A review committee of faculty members, chaired by the Acting Vice Dean, Undergraduate & International adjudicates proposals and funding allocations. Applicants are notified of results.
Jan. 30
Project listings and student application forms are posted online on the Current Students Website.
Before Feb. 22 Students apply by submitting the 398H/Y application. Applications are forwarded to the project supervisors, who chooses the students for their project. Eligible students will not have previously received funding for an Arts & Science international opportunity including 398 REP, ICM, DFIII (formerly DIIF), or CFHU. (Some exceptions may apply, please inquire for details.)
Week of March 20
Mandatory meeting of project supervisors. (Exact date to be determined).
March 21 Project supervisors forward by email their list of selected students to the program administrator, Deborah Shaw, at deb.shaw@utoronto.ca.
March
Students selected into 398H/399Ys are informed and enrolled on ROSI by our office. Supervisors sign contracts with students and return them to the program administrator.
