Philosophy

David Savan Dissertation Prize

  • Established by the Estate of David Savan.
  • It is awarded for the best dissertation over the past three years. Dissertations will be judged on the basis of their contribution to philosophy in general and the winning thesis will exemplify an exceptional mix of the qualities of originality, rigour and good writing. 

Donald Ainslie Graduate Scholarship in the Department of Philosophy 

  • Established through the generous donations of various donors to honour outgoing department chair, Donald Ainslie.
  • It is awarded to a graduate student in the Department of Philosophy on the basis of academic merit.

Dr. Jay Alan Smith / Ontario Graduate Scholarship in the Department of Philosophy (OGS)

  • Established by Dr. Jay A. Smith.
  • It is awarded to an OGS recipient in the Department of Philosophy. 

Dr. Richard W. Yee Fellowships in Medieval Philosophy

  • Established by Dr. Richard Yee and matched by GSEF.
  • It is awarded to a graduate student enrolled in the Department of Philosophy. 

Department of Philosophy Graduate Fellowship Fund 

  • Established through the generous donations of various donors.
  • It is awarded to a graduate student in the Department of Philosophy on the basis of academic merit. 
George Paxton Young Memorial Prizes in Philosophy
  • Established in 1894 in honour of the Rev. George Paxton Young, Professor of Metaphysics and Ethics from 1871-1889.
  • It is awarded to a graduate student in the Department of Philosophy who has been selected either to read a paper or to comment on one at any philosophy conference. Award will be made in recognition of scholastic achievement.  

Gordon Cheesbrough Graduate Fellowship in Philosophy

  • Established by Gordon Cheesbrough and matched by the Ontario Student Opportunity Trust Fund (OSOTF).
  • It is awarded to a graduate student in the Department of Philosophy, for the purpose of research (i.e., conference presentations, travel, etc.). (OSOTF

Graduate Philosophy Bursaries 

  • Established by the members of the Faculty of the Graduate Department of Philosophy and other generous donors.
  • It is awarded on the basis of academic merit and financial need to a graduate student in the Department of Philosophy.  

Hain / Ontario Graduate Scholarship in the Department of Philosophy (OGS) 

  • Established by Robert C. Hain.
  • It is awarded to an Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) recipient in the Department of Philosophy.  

Hans Maag / Ontario Graduate Scholarship in the Department of Philosophy (OGS) 

  • Established by Hans Maag.
  • It is awarded to an OGS recipient in the Department of Philosophy.  

Ian Hacking Graduate Travel Award 

  • Established by Ian Hacking.
  • It is awarded to a graduate student in the Department of Philosophy for the purpose of travel. Financial need will be considered. 
Julia Ching Memorial Fellowship in Chinese Thought and Culture
  • Established through the generous donations by various donors.
  • It is awarded to a PhD student in the Department of Philosophy, Religion or East Asian Studies. The scholarship is to assist students with their later studies on Chinese thought and culture. 

Michael J. Herman Graduate Fellowship(s) in Philosophy 

  • Established by Michael J. Herman and matched by the Graduate Student Endowment Fund (GSEF).
  • It is awarded to a graduate student(s) in the Department of Philosophy on the basis of academic merit.  

Philosophy and Law Alumni Scholarship 

  • Established through the generous donations by various donors and matched by GSEF.
  • It is awarded to a graduate student in the Department of Philosophy taking courses related to the Philosophy of Law and/or a student enrolled in the JD/PhD (Philosophy) Program. Academic merit and financial need will be considered. 
Philosophy of Science Award 
  • Established by Stephen Bowman.
  • It is awarded to a graduate student(s) in the Department of Philosophy, on the basis of academic merit or financial need. 
PPEF - Sidney P.H. Robinson Graduate Scholarship in Ancient Philosophy 
  • It is awarded on the basis of academic merit to an international PhD student(s) studying ancient philosophy in the Department of Philosophy.  

Sidney P.H. Robinson Graduate Scholarships in Ancient Philosophy

  • Established by Sidney P.H. Robinson and friends of Sidney P.H. Robinson.
  • It is awarded to a graduate student(s) studying Ancient Philosophy in the Departments of Classics and/or Philosophy, on the basis of academic merit. 

Thomas A. Goudge Memorial Fellowship in Philosophy

  • Established through the generous donations of various donors and matched by OSOTF.
