History and Philosophy of Science and Technology

The Institute for the History and Philosophy of Science and Technology provides a comprehensive program of undergraduate instruction in general history of science, history of biology, history of medicine, history of mathematics, history of physical science, history of technology, general philosophy of science, philosophy of biology, philosophy of physical science, and science and society.

The history and philosophy of science and technology (HPS) is a discipline that cuts across the sciences and humanities. HPS courses treat science and mathematics, medicine, and technology as: historically significant in themselves, integral components of the general development of knowledge, culture, and society, and conceptually and theoretically rich domains for philosophical analysis.

 

Admission Information

  • Apply to the Humanities admission category on the St. George campus
  • Six Grade 12 U or M courses, including English are required
  • History courses are recommended
  • Students outside of Ontario should have the equivalent senior high school credits

  • HPS 100H1 - Introduction to History and Philosophy of Science

 

Advice for First Year

Students interested in the HPS program should take one full first-year course in science, subject to approval of the Director of Undergraduate Studies. This course must include a laboratory or practical component. Students should also take HIS 109Y1 - The Development of European Civilization, 1350-1945. It is recommended that students intending to pursue an HPS take HPS 100H1 in their first year.

 

Careers

The program is useful for elementary and secondary school teaching, museum and library work, science writing and editing, law and other fields where competence in both science and humanities is valuable.

Most students with IHPST bachelor’s degrees go on to graduate study in either History of Science or Philosophy of Science. Some pursue careers in high school teaching or go on to become museum curators.
