Contemporary Asian Studies
Based at the Asian Institute in the Munk School of Global Affairs, the Contemporary Asian Studies program is an interdisciplinary undergraduate program that focuses on current events as well as socio-political and economic trends in the Asia Pacific region.
The program welcomes students who wish to combine concentrated study in a traditional academic discipline with an interdisciplinary major program that focuses on contemporary developments in this rapidly changing region.
Admission Information
- Apply to either the Humanities or Social Sciences admission categories on the St. George campus
- Six Grade 12 U or M courses, including English are required
- Students outside of Ontario should have the equivalent senior high school credits

Advice for First Year
The Contemporary Asian Studies program does not offer any courses at the first-year level. The foundation courses for the program (students can choose one or take both) are ASI200Y1 – Global Asia and POL 215YI - Politics and Transformation of the Asia-Pacific (this course requires the completion of one full course in political science or four full courses).
Students in the Contemporary Asian Studies major program are required to take two consecutive years of Asian languages courses, unless they are already fluent in an Asian language. Chinese, Japanese and Korean language courses are offered at the first-year level by the Department of East Asian Studies.
