ELL010H1F Intensive Academic English, May 2-11, 2012
Please note that the last day to drop this class will be Monday, April 30. After that date, the academic fee for the course will be waived only for students who complete the course.
Open to students in all colleges. Priority given to students currently finishing Year 1 or Year 2. Remaining spaces will be opened to students finishing Year 3 or Year 4.
There is a modest fee of $200 for this course--to be waived if you complete it. This course will be offered May 2-11, 2012.
Location: Sidney Smith Hall Rm. 1085, 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.
How to Register for the course:
Register for ELL010H1F via ROSI. Register for this course along with your Summer courses, starting on April 9. Note that priority in registration will be given to students completing Year 1 and Year 2. If spaces remain, they will be made available to students completing Year 3 and 4.
ELL010H1F is listed under "New College Courses" in the Summer Timetable. Please note that spaces are limited, so plan to register early. The course will have a wait list. Note that you may not take ELL010H1F more than once. Please be sure you have a serious intent to complete this course, since many students want to take ELL010H1F.
This is a non-credit course (it will not count toward your degree credits), but your transcript will note you attended the course. The course has a fee of $200 that will be waived if you complete the course. When you register for the course, this fee will be included in your fee statement (invoice) for the 2012 Summer Session.
If you complete the course, your fee statement will be credited with this academic fee of $200. The criteria for completion are these: attending at least seven of eight classes and completing all written assignments. The credit to your statement may take several weeks to process, so please be patient.
Please note that all students who register for ELL0101H1F along with other summer courses, or for ELL010H1F alone, will be charged incidental fees. These incidential fees will not be refunded, even if ELL010H1F is your only course this summer term. The ELL waiver applies only to the $200 academic fee.
Should you run into any course load problems during registration for this course, contact your Registrar, who will be able to resolve them for you. Please be aware that having your name on the wait list does not guarantee enrollment in this course.
When you register for this course, it may appear in your personal timetable in ROSI for Summer. Please ignore this error in ROSI. The course is offered from May 2-11, 2012, and will not conflict with your Summer courses.
Description of the course:
This intensive non-credit summer course will show you how to enhance the high-level language skills you will need in the coming academic year. The course is designed for undergraduates in the Faculty of Arts and Science whose first language is not English (ESL or multilingual students), as well as native speakers seeking to improve their English language skills. We will focus on reading comprehension in various subject areas, speaking in an academic context, listening to lectures, and academic writing linked to critical thinking. Learning goals include:
- expanding knowledge of academic vocabulary and patterns of thought in sciences, social sciences, and humanities
- improving high-level reading comprehension and speed
- gaining understanding of how to structure and develop different types of university writing assignments
- improving the ability to listen to and comprehend lectures
- practice speaking and giving oral presentations on academically relevant topics
- getting to know faculty in ELL to build supportive relationships that can continue in the coming year
- building your confidence for interaction in English with other students, professors, and teaching assistants.
Course Schedule:
This course will meet daily from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. There will be a lecture/discussion on a relevant topic, followed by an hour of language-learning activities and exercises related to the lecture topic. You will work with a team of experienced instructors from the New College Writing Centre in groups of 15 students. Students will have homework assignments each day of this course. During the three final days of the course, each student will have an individual consultation on his or her writing, and how best to proceed for future success.

A required course reader will be available for purchase at Print City (180 Bloor Street West, near the corner of Bloor Street and University Avenue). The title of this course reader is ELL010H1F Intensive Academic English. The cost of the reader is $42 plus HST.
Print City is open from 9 to 7 Monday to Thursday; 9 to 6 on Friday; 11 to 5 on Saturday; closed Sunday.
Instructor:
Leora Freedman has been the Coordinator of the ELL project since it began in 2008. She has worked intensively with U of T students in many disciplines and programs as an instructor in the New College, University College, and Health Sciences Writing Centres. She presently facilitates workshops for U of T faculty and teaching assistants to enable them to address the needs of multilingual students more effectively. For many years she lived in Israel and taught in the Department of English as a Foreign Language at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Leora Freedman holds a Master of Fine Arts degree in fiction writing from the University of Arizona and has taught many college and university courses in English, professional communication, and academic writing.
