Changes in effect beginning the 2012 Summer Session:
- Degree students in the Faculty of Arts & Science may select up to 2.0 full-course equivalents of their degree credits offered by the Faculty of Arts & Science on the St. George campus to be assessed on a Credit/ No Credit (CR/NCR) basis.
- The last day to make changes to (add/remove) a CR/NCR request is the last date to cancel the course without academic penalty.
- To achieve a status of CR (Credit) students must achieve a final mark of at least 50%. Marks below 50% will be assessed as NCR (No Credit).
Degree students in the Faculty of Arts & Science may select up to 2.0 full-course equivalents of their degree credits offered by the Faculty of Arts & Science on the St. George campus to be assessed on a Credit/ No Credit (CR/NCR) basis.
Students must make changes to this mode of assessment (e.g. add or remove a CR/NCR request) no later than the last date to cancel the course without academic penalty. Once the deadline has passed, students may not under any circumstances reverse this decision.
To achieve a status of CR (Credit), a student must achieve a final mark of at least 50%. Marks below that will be assessed as NCR (No Credit).
Courses with a final status of CR will count as degree credits but will have no effect on the student’s GPA. They will count as Distribution Requirements/Breadth Requirements and degree credits, but cannot be used to satisfy subject POSt requirements.
Courses with a final status of NCR will not count as degree credits but will not count as failures, and will also not be included in the GPA calculation.
Students may exercise this option to a total of 2.0 full-course equivalents within the total number of credits required for a degree. The choice is not restricted as to year or level of course.
A course taken on a CR/NCR basis may NOT be used to satisfy program requirements.
Students taking a course on a CR/NCR basis will not be identified individually to the instructor teaching that course.
This option is not available to Arts & Science non-degree students or to students from other faculties/divisions of the University of Toronto.
This option is not available for courses offered by other campuses or divisions taken by Arts & Science degree students.
The CR/NCR option cannot be used for a course in which the student has committed an academic offence. If a student has specified the CR/NCR option in a course in which he or she commits an academic offence, the CR/NCR option will be revoked and the percentage grade will stand as the course grade.
When should a student consider this option?
The CR/NCR option was created to encourage you to expand your possible course choices to areas where you think you have interest, but may not be confident about how well you will do. Many students in the past were reluctant to risk enrolling in such a course, even though their overall education may have been improved by doing so.
With this option, you can try out a subject in your first year that you find intriguing but think may jeopardize your chances at entry to a limited enrolment program. Or, as you approach the end of your degree, you may try a subject you've always felt drawn to, or add a course in which you may not have strong abilities but which you know will prepare you better for future study.
You may not use a course taken on a CR/NCR basis to satisfy Subject POSt requirements. Therefore, if you think you may be interested in a program that requires a particular course as an entrance requirement, you should not take it CR/NCR. Also, if you think you may take a required course CR/NCR and later substitute another course to give you the total number of courses required for that POSt, you are advised not to take the required course CR/NCR, since your future plans may change and you may have created a problem for yourself unnecessarily. For this reason, Commerce students should avoid taking RSM courses on a CR/NCR basis.
You can use it for your Distribution/Breadth Requirement.
You are advised not to be too tactical in using this opportunity. For example, you cannot use it to avoid having the mark in a difficult required course count toward your GPA, since you cannot use it for courses required for your subject POSt.
In general, you should reserve CR/NCR for an opportunity to broaden your education beyond your "comfort zone." If you have further questions or need some advice, contact your college registrar's office.
When and How can I add or remove a CR/NCR request?

- For 2012-2013 Fall/Winter Session courses, changes (adds/removals) can be made beginning on August 20, 2012
