2009 Summer Step 1: Choose Courses
Program of Study (Subject POSt) Enrolment
Some courses limit enrolment to, or give priority to students in specific subject POSts. This means your subject POSt enrolment information must be up-to-date when you begin enrolling in courses. You can list/add/change your subject POSt enrolment information on ROSI at www.rosi.utoronto.ca beginning April 1, 2009. Refer to the 2009-2010 Fall-Winter Sessions Registration Handbook & Timetable for details.
Select Courses
Use the Calendar and this publication to decide which courses you wish to take. Double-check the time for courses you have chosen to avoid conflicts. ROSI does not check for time conflicts—it is your responsibility to create a conflict-free schedule.
Pre-requisites, co-requisites and exclusions indicated in the Calendar course descriptions must be carefully observed. Refer to the Calendar for definitions. Be aware that prerequisites, co-requisites, and exclusions are not checked by ROSI in real time, but they will be checked! If you do not meet them, you may be removed from the course. This can happen at any time, even after classes have started. If you have already taken an exclusion, you will be required to withdraw from the course if discovered during the session of enrolment and will be refused degree credit in the excluded course if discovered at any time in a subsequent session.
Students using courses taken at another university as prerequisites must contact the department offering a course prior to enrolling or immediately after enrolling in the course to avoid being removed.
Enrolment Controls
Enrolment controls are used to determine criteria/restrictions for enrolling in a course. Controls can be based on one or more of the following:
- admission category
- subject POSt (program)
- year of study
- 4th year – expect to complete 14 or more credits by the end of the 2008-2009 fall-winter session
- 3rd year – expect to complete 9 to 13.5 credits by the end of the 2008-2009 fall-winter session
- 2nd year – expect to complete 4 to 8.5 credits by the end of the 2008-2009 fall-winter session
- 1st year – expect to complete fewer than 4 credits by the end of the 2008-2009 fall-winter session
Enrolment controls, if used, appear in the timetable listings. Not all courses have enrolment controls and some courses have multiple controls, but all courses have enrolment limitations.
Note: enrolment controls listed beside a course in the timetable listings apply to all lecture sections of a course unless otherwise noted.
Enrolment Indicators
Enrolment indicators are used in the “Enrolment Indicator” column of the timetable listings. They identify how enrolment controls are being used and/or alert you to different enrolment processes.
| P | Students in a specific admission category or subject POSt and/or year of study will receive PRIORITY from April 13 to 20. On April 21 at 6 a.m., the priority is removed and some of the remaining spaces will be made available to all students. You can request P courses on the SWS. Waiting lists are available from April 13 to May 13 for F/Y section code courses and July 2 for S section code courses. |
| R | The course is RESTRICTED to a specific group(s) of students at all times. This restriction does not change at any time during the enrolment cycle. You can request R courses on the SWS. Waiting lists are available from April 13 to May 13 for F/Y section code courses and July 2 for S section code courses. |
| E | Students must ENROL at the department. Departmental enrolment instructions are located in the timetable listings. This indicator is normally used when the type of course is an independent study or field activity and where additional approvals/conditions or processes are required. You cannot request or cancel an E course on the SWS. To cancel an E course, go to the department or your college registrar’s office. Please note that certain deadlines occur on the weekend—if you need to contact the department or your college registrar’s office, it should be done the Friday before the deadline. Waiting lists are not available for these courses. |
| PE | Students in a specific admission category or subject POSt and/or year of study will receive PRIORITY from April 13 to 20. During this period, eligible students should enrol in the course on the SWS. Students not enrolled from the waiting list by April 20 will be removed from the waiting list on April 21. Starting April 21, the priority is removed and any remaining spaces are available to all students; however, you must ENROL at the department. Departmental enrolment instructions are located in the timetable listings. To cancel a PE course from April 21 forward, go to the department or your college registrar’s office. Please note that certain deadlines occur on the weekend—if you need to contact the department or your college registrar’s office, it should be done the Friday before the deadline. Waiting lists are available from April 13 to 20 only. |
