Enrol in a Subject POSt: Computer Science

St. George campus Arts & Science students are required to enrol in subject POSt(s) at the end of the session in which they complete their fourth full-course equivalent.

You must enrol in the minimum appropriate combination of subject POSts for your degree before your course enrolment period starts, or you will be prevented from enrolling in courses on ROSI.

The appropriate minimum combinations are shown in the chart below:

If your intended degree is: You must be enrolled in at least:
Hon. B.A. or Hon. B.Sc. 1 specialist or
2 majors or
1 major + 2 minors
B.Com. Specialist in Commerce and Finance
B.A or B.Sc. 1 major or
2 minors
Please note: Students whose first registration in an Arts and Science degree program is in the 2001 Summer session or later are not eligible to pursue a B.A. or B.Sc.; they must pursue an Honours B.A. or Honours B.Sc., or B.Com. degree.

Please note that you can enrol in no more than three subject POSts, of which only two can be majors or specialists.

You may not be enrolled in more than one Computer Science subject POSt, with the exception of the Specialist in Linguistics & Computing and the Specialist in Mathematics and Its Applications (Computer Science) [which requires you also to be enrolled in the Major in Computer Science].

Students finishing first-year computer science

Students offered guaranteed admission to computer science

Students who were admitted to the University of Toronto for the 2006 fall session and were offered guaranteed admission to computer science still need to submit a request for a computer science subject POSt so that the department will know which program(s) you are interested in and can confirm that you have met the minimum requirements. Follow the procedures below.

Students not offered guaranteed admission to computer science

A number of spaces in computer science programs will be available to students not offered guaranteed admission. Follow the procedures below to submit a request for a computer science subject POSt.

First and second request periods

There are two request periods for computer science subject POSts:

  • First request period: April 3 to May 21
  • Second request period: July 9 to August 26

If you expect to complete the required courses during the 2006-2007 fall-winter session, you should submit your subject POSt request during the first period. If you expect to complete the required courses during the 2007 summer session, you should submit your request during the second request period. Remember that once you have completed 4.0 full-course equivalents, you will not be able to enrol in further courses until you have enrolled in the minimum appropriate combination of subject POSts. While you are waiting for the result of your request for a computer science subject POSt, you may need to enrol in interim backup subject POSt(s) if you want to enrol in courses. If you need assistance, please contact your college registrar's office.

How to request a computer science subject POSt

There are 3 steps to enrol in a computer science subject POSt.

  • Step 1: submit a request on the SWS
  • Step 2: check the SWS to see if the department has given you an "invitation" to enrol
  • Step 3: accept the invitation to enrol

Step 1: submit a request on the SWS

Log on to the SWS and select "Subject POSts" from the main menu. Select "add a subject POSt," and enter ONLY ONE of the following codes:

  • ASSPE0108: use this code if you want to request the specialist program in computer science and economics
  • ASSPE1774: use this code if you want to request the specialist program in human-computer interaction
  • ASSPE1688: use this code if you want to request any of the following subject POSts
    • Major program in computer science
    • Specialist program in computer science
    • Specialist program in computer science: artificial intelligence option
    • Specialist program in computer science: foundations option
    • Specialist program in computer science: information systems
    • Specialist program in computer science: software engineering option
    • Specialist program in computer science and mathematics
    • Specialist program in computer science and physics
    • Specialist program in computer science and statistics
  • ASSPE2004: use this code if you want to request the specialist program in linguistics and computing
  • ASSPE1595: use this code if you want to request the specialist program in mathematics & its applications (computer science)

Bioinformatics and Computational Biology is a Type 3 subject POSt. For details, check this page. For contact information, see the list of subject POSt codes and contacts.

Once you've confirmed the request, the status field next to the subject POSt code for the program you're requesting will read: "REQUESTED - You have applied for admission to this subject POSt" if ROSI registered the request successfully.

Step 2: check the SWS to see if the department has given you an "invitation" to enrol

Results will be available on the SWS beginning on these dates:

  • First request period: beginning July 3
  • Second request period: beginning September 11

To see your results, you must return to the SWS and select "subject POSts" from the main menu. A list of your subject POSt will appear, which will show those you've requested (with a status next to them) as well as those in which you are "active," or enrolled.

ASSPE0108: Specialist in Computer Science and Economics

If you have been given an "invitation" to enrol in the specialist program in Computer Science and Economics, the status field next to the subject POSt code (ASSPE0108) will read: "INVITED - You have been offered admission to this subject POSt".

The department will also have considered you for the "ASSPE1688, Specialist Program in Computer Science Foundations", so you may also have an INVITED status for this program. Note: you can change from this program to many other computer science specialist programs (see below, "ASSPE1688: All other specialist programs," for details).

You may accept either program but not both!

ASSPE1774: Specialist in Human-Computer Interaction

If you have been given an "invitation" to enrol in the specialist program in Human-Computer Interaction, the status field next to the subject POSt code (ASSPE1774) will read: "INVITED - You have been offered admission to this subject POSt".

The department will also have considered you for the "ASSPE1688, Specialist Program in Computer Science Foundations," so you may also have an INVITED status for this program. Note: you can change from this program to many other computer science specialist programs (see below, "ASSPE1688: All other specialist programs," for details).

You may accept either program but not both!

ASSPE2004: Specialist in Linguistics & Computing

If you have been given an "invitation" to enrol in the specialist program in linguistics and computing, the status field next to the subject POSt code (ASSPE2004) will read: "INVITED - You have been offered admission to this subject POSt." You will also have a status of INVITED for the major in Computer Science (ASMAJ1688). You must accept BOTH programs in order to get priority for CSC course enrolment.

ASSPE1595: Specialist in Mathematics & Its Applications (Computer Science)

If you have been given an "invitation" to enrol in the specialist program in mathematics & its applications (computer science), the status field next to the subject POSt code (ASSPE1595) will read: "INVITED - You have been offered admission to this subject POSt." You will also have a status of INVITED for the major in Computer Science (ASMAJ1688). You must accept BOTH programs in order to get priority for CSC course enrolment.

ASSPE1688: All other specialist programs

If you have been given an "invitation" to enrol in a specialist program in computer science (other than the ones listed above), the status field next to the subject POSt code "ASSPE1688: Specialist in Computer Science Foundations," will read: "INVITED - You have been offered admission to this subject POSt." If you accept this invitation, you will be enrolled in the specialist program in computer science: comprehensive option.

You may change from the specialist option to any other specialist program in computer science, except:

  • The specialist program in computer science & economics
  • The specialist program in human-computer interaction
  • The specialist program in linguistics & computing
  • The specialist program in mathematics & its applications (computer science)

To do so, you use the "change" feature on the SWS for the ASSPE1688 subject POSt code.

You can find a listing of subject POSt groups that allow this type of changing .

ASMAJ1688: Major in Computer Science

If you have been given an "invitation" to enrol in the major program in computer science, the status field next to the subject POSt code (ASMAJ1688) will read: "INVITED - You have been offered admission to this subject POSt." It is possible to have an INVITED status for both the ASSPE1688 and the ASMAJ1688. If so, you may accept only one subject POSt, not both!

Step 3: accept the invitation to enrol

The deadline to accept an invitation is:

  • First request period: August 9
  • Second request period: September 23

To accept an invitation to enrol, select "accept" - the status for the subject POSt code will change to "ACTIVE - You are enrolled in this subject POSt." To decline an invitation to enrol, select "delete."

If you have been refused permission to enrol, the status will be "REFUSED." No further action is required.

If a decision about your request has not been made, the status will remain as "REQUESTED." Note that if you have transfer credits and you have not submitted a copy of your previous university transcript, please do so in order for the department to make a decision. You should visit the Computer Science Undergraduate Office for instructions.
