Step 3: Choose your courses
Use the information contained in the timetable listings of this handbook to select courses. Course descriptions are found in the Calendar and in departmental handbooks available from most departments and on departmental web sites. Degree and subject POSt requirements are also listed in the Calendar. Select the courses you need carefully! Although you can make changes, some courses will not have space available if you wait too long.
Please note that you can find timetable listings for First-Year Seminar (199) courses, for evening sections, and a list of courses not offered in 2009-2010? elsewhere on this web site.
Updated timetable information is posted throughout the summer on the Faculty Registrar's Office web site. Bookmark that page and keep checking for new information! We will also send a Timetable Update to your mailing address in late June, so be sure that it's up-to-date on the SWS. While most courses are open to students in any program of study and in any year, some courses have enrolment conditions, consisting of enrolment indicators and enrolment controls, that govern which students are permitted to enrol in that course. If a course has enrolment conditions, they will be indicated in the timetable listings: the "Enrolment Indictator" column lists enrolment indicators; the "Enrolment Controls" column lists enrolment controls.
The Faculty makes every attempt to ensure that the room assigned will accommodate the number of students expected to enrol; however, as there is not unlimited space to meet demand, some students may not obtain space in every course they want. You may add yourself to a waiting list for a course or courses, but this does not guarantee enrolment in the course(s); therefore, you are advised to select alternate courses in which to enrol in the event that you are unable to enrol in a course that is full. We recommend that you prepare as flexible a timetable as possible, with as many alternative course choices as possible.
Enrolment indicators are defined by the following codes below. A general explanation associated with the indicator is provided; however, specific departmental instructions (if any) are provided in the departmental instructions in the timetable listings.
| P | Students in a specific admission category or subject POSt and/or year of study will receive PRIORITY until August 5. On August 7 the priority is removed and any remaining spaces are available to all students. You can request P courses on the SWS. Waiting lists are available from July 7 to September 8, 2009 for F/Y section code courses and January 3, 2010 for S section code courses. |
| R | The course is RESTRICTED to a specific group of students at all times. This restriction does not change at any time during the enrolment cycle. You can request R courses on the SWS. Waiting lists are available from July 7 to September 8, 2009 for F/Y section code courses and January 3, 2010 for S section code courses. |
| RP | The course is RESTRICTED to a specific group of students during the St. George campus round of enrolment. During the open round of enrolment (starting August 12), PRIORITY remains for a specific group of students; however, some spaces may be made available to other students. You can request RP courses on the SWS. Waiting lists are available from July 7 to September 8, 2009 for F/Y section code courses and January 3, 2010 for S section code courses. |
| E | Students must ENROL at the department. Departmental enrolment instructions are located in the timetable listings. You cannot request an E course on the SWS. To cancel an E course, go to the department or your college registrar’s office Please note that certain deadlines occur on the weekend—if you need to contact the department or your college registrar’s office, it should be done the Friday before the deadline. Waiting lists are not available for these courses. |
| PE | Students in a specific admission category or subject POSt and/or year of study will receive PRIORITY until August 10. During this period, eligible students should enrol in the course on the SWS. Students not enrolled from the waiting list by August 10 will be removed from the waiting list when ROSI is closed on August 11. Starting August 12, the priority is removed and any remaining spaces are available to all students; however, you must ENROL at the department. Departmental enrolment instructions are located in the timetable listings. To cancel a PE course after August 12, go to the department or your college registrar’s office. Please note that certain deadlines occur on the weekend—if you need to contact the department or your college registrar’s office, it should be done the Friday before the deadline. Waiting lists are available from July 7 to August 10 only. |
| AE | Students must receive APPROVAL by the department. You should request AE courses on the SWS by July 21—you will receive an “interim” status. The department reviews the interim list and determines which students qualify. On August 1 you should check your status in the course on the SWS; it will be either APP (approved) or REF (refused). If your status remains INT (interim), the department has not approved your enrolment—you should contact the department directly. If you are approved, no further action is required. If you have been refused, you may want to enrol in another course. If you wish to ENROL in the course after July 22, you must do so at the department. Note: Students on the waiting list on July 21 who do not have an “interim” status will be removed from the waiting list on July 22. If you wish to ENROL in the course after July 21, you must do so at the department. Departmental enrolment instructions are located in the timetable listings. To cancel a course after July 21 go to the department or your college registrar’s office. For Type AE courses offered in the winter session, check the departmental enrolment instructions in the timetable listings. Please note that certain deadlines occur on the weekend—if you need to contact the department or your college registrar’s office, it should be done the Friday before the deadline. Waiting lists are available from July 7 to July 21 only. |
| * | When an asterisk is used in conjunction with an enrolment indicator, not all enrolment controls listed are assigned the same number of spaces in a course. For example,
|
Enrolment controls may include one or more of the following criteria:
Admission category
First-year students are admitted into one of the following admission categories:
- Commerce
- Computer Science
- Humanities
- Life Sciences
- Physical and Mathematical Sciences
- Social Sciences
Subject POSt
If a course has a subject POSt as an enrolment control, you must be enrolled in that subject POSt before you will be permitted to enrol in the course.
Year of Study
Use the information below to determine your year of study:
Fourth year
- you expect to complete at least 14 credits by the end of the 2009 summer session
Third year
- you expect to complete 9 to 13.5 credits by the end of the 2009 summer session
Second Year
- you expect to complete 4 to 8.5 credits by the end of the 2009 summer session
First Year
- you expect to complete fewer than 4 credits by the end of the 2009 summer session, or are a first-year, newly-admitted degree student
Newly-admitted transfer students should contact their college registrar’s office for assistance in determining their year of study.
College
A few courses offered by the colleges give preference to students based on their college of registration.
Other
Some meeting sections are restricted to students in other U of T faculties/divisions. Arts & Science students are not permitted to enrol in these sections. Usually these sections are coded with a "2" as the first digit of the meeting section; for example, "L2001" or "L2002", etc.
Notes about enrolment controls
Look at the listing for PHY132H1F and PHY132H1S.
Note:1 Enrolment controls listed beside a course in the timetable listing apply to all lecture sections unless otherwise noted. For example, PHY132H1 F and PHY132H1S both have enrolment controls of “1st Yr Studies in Life Science, and 1st Yr Studies in Mathematical & Physcial Sciences."
All sections of PHY132H1F and PHY132H1S have an enrolment control that gives priority to students in “1st Yr Studies in Life Science, and 1st Yr Studies in Mathematical and Physical Sciences.” These controls are in effect during the priority period in the St. George campus round of enrolment (from July 27 to August 5). Starting August 7, all priorities are removed from all lecture sections, and available spaces are made available to all students.
Note: 2 Not all enrolment controls listed will be assigned the same capacity in each section. These sections have an enrolment indciator with an asterisk beside it (ie. P). Refer to the explanation for the indicator on the previous page for details.
How to read enrolment controls in the timetable listings
Look at the listing for ECO100Y1Y.
ECO100Y1 Y sections L0101 and L0201 have enrolment indicators of “R.” Sections L0301 and L5101 have enrolment indicators of “P.”
This means that sections L0101 and L0201 are restricted to students in “1st Yr Studies Commerce (STG)” during the whole enrolment period (from July 27 to September 22). For sections L0301 and L5101, “1st Yr A&S (St. George campus)" students have access to all the spaces during the prority period of the St. George campus round of enrolment (July 27 to August 5). Students in “1st Yr Studies in Commerce” cannot enrol in thse two sections. On August 7, any remaining spaces are made available to all students except for “1st Yr Studies in Commerce” students.
Look at the listing for PSY430H1F and PSY430H1S":http://www.artsandscience.utoronto.ca/ofr/timetable/winter/psy.html.
PSY430H1F and PSY430H1S have enrolment indicators of “PE." This means that during the St. George campus round of enrolment (from July 7 to August 10), priority is given to students who are enrolled in the subject POSts listed for both PSY430H1F L0101 and PSY430H1S L0101. Starting August 12, the course becomes an “E” indicator course—students should follow the departmental instructions found in the timetable listings to enrol. Students who enrolled between July 7 and August 10 must contact the department or their college registrar’s office if they wish to cancel after August 12.
Look at the listing forENG364Y1Y.
ENG364Y1Y sections L0101 and L5101 have an enrolment indicator of “P” and enrolment controls of English and joint English minor, major, and specialist programs. This means that during during the priority period in the St. George campus round of enrolment (from July 7 to August 5), priority is given to students enrolled in the Minor, Major, or Specialist in English, the Specialist in English & Drama, the Specialist in English & Linguistics, and the the Specialist in English & Philosophy for both L0101 and L0201. Starting August 7, the priority is removed and any remaining spaces in the course are opened to all students.
Look at the listing for ARC338H1S.
ARC338H1S has an enrolment indicator of “R” and enrolment controls of “3 & 4 MAJ Arch Studies Design, 3&4 MAJ Arch Studies (His, Theory, Crtcsm).” This means that throughout the enrolment period (July 7 to September 22) the course is restricted to third and fourth-year students enrolled in the Major program in Architectural Studies (Design) and third and fourth-year students enrolled in the Major program in Architectural Studies (History, Theory and Criticism). Students who are not in these enrolment control groups are not eligible to enrol in the course. This restriction is not lifted.
Exclusions, Prerequisites, Co-requisites
In addition to enrolment controls, certain courses have exclusions, prerequisites, and co-requisites, all of which are listed in the Calendar. For example, the Calendar entry for STA442H1 lists ECO327Y1 or ECO357Y1 or STA302H1 as a prerequisite.
Be aware that prerequisites and co-requisites are not checked by ROSI in real time, but they will be checked! They can be checked at any time during the session, even after classes start.
If you do not meet course pre- or co-requisite(s), you may be removed from the course. If you have already taken an exclusion, you will be required to withdraw from the course if discovered during the session of enrolment and will be refused degree credit in the excluded course if discovered at any time in a subsequent session. If you wish to use a course taken at another university for a prerequisite, you must take your transcript and transfer credit assessment to the department offering the course prior to, or as soon as possible after, enrolling in the course. If you do not do so, the department will assume you do not have the appropriate prerequisites and you will be removed from the course and informed by mail. You should also check with your college registrar to make sure that your course selections are correct and appropriate, and that none of the courses you wish to take duplicate your transfer credits.
Conflicting courses
ROSI does not check for course time conflicts, so plan your schedule carefully. Once you have decided which courses you are eligible to take, make sure that none of your choices are offered at conflicting times. To help you to create a conflict-free schedule, a weekly schedule worksheet has been included among the forms in the middle of this handbook. If you enrol in courses which conflict with one another, you do so at your own risk.
Alternating meeting sections
Some courses have alternating practical (laboratory) meeting sections. These meeting sections convene every other week and are noted with an (A) indicator in the course listing beside the time offering.
Information concerning the scheduling of alternating practicals for these courses and when each of the labs start is located in the departmental enrolment instructions in the timetable listings.
Alternating Practical Sections in First-Year Courses
Some course practicals enable you to alternate practicals on the same day in alternating weeks.
Courses included:
- BIO150Y1Y
- Chemistry courses (CHM138H1F/S, CHM139H1F/S)
- Physics courses (PHY151H1F, PHY152H1S)
BIO150Y1 and CHM138H1/139H1 F/S – select P sections in BOTH courses that end in a DIFFERENT DIGIT
BIO150Y1 and PHY151H1F/152H1S – select P sections in BOTH courses that end in the SAME DIGIT.
CHM138H1F/139H1F/138H1S/139H1S and PHY151H1F/152H1S – select P sections in BOTH courses that end in the SAME DIGIT.
NOTE: You CANNOT alternate practicals with the above courses with CHM151Y1, nor PHY131H1/132H1.
For example, if you intend to take BIO150Y1Y, section P0101 (M1:30 – 4:30), you can take CHM138H1F, section P0102 (M2-5) and CHM139H1S, section P0102 (M2-5). The Biology and Chemistry labs alternate on Mondays.
If you intend to take BIO150Y1, section P0101 (M1:30 – 4:30), but want to alternate with PHY151H1 and PHY152H1 instead of the CHM courses, you would select PHY151H1F P0101, M2-5 and PHY152H1S P0101, M2-5, so the labs in Biology and Physics alternate on the Mondays. On the other hand, it is possible to take CHM139H1F P0401, R2-5 and CHM138H1S P0401, R2-5 along with PHY151H1F P0401, R1-4 and PHY152H1S P0401, R1-4, so the labs in Chemistry and Physics alternate on Thursdays.
Courses offered by other U of T campuses
If you want to enrol in courses offered by the University of Toronto Mississauga or the University of Toronto Scarborough, you should check the University of Toronto Mississauga or University of Toronto Scarborough enrolment instructions.
You may enrol in these courses starting August 14, 2009.
Please note that some University of Toronto Mississauga and University of Toronto Scarborough courses restrict enrolment to students registered on those campuses, or have very limited space for St. George students.
It is your responsibility to:
- ensure that these courses do not duplicate and are not exclusions for courses you have already taken.
- check with your subject POSt sponsor regarding the acceptability of courses for program requirements.
- check with your college registrar’s office regarding the acceptability of courses for degree requirements.
Failure to follow these steps could result in loss of credits and delay your graduation.
Wheelchair access
Be aware that not all room locations are wheelchair-accessible. If you require wheelchair access, inform your college registrar’s office of your course choices by June 1. Although every effort will be made to accommodate students requiring wheelchair access, after this date it is extremely difficult to rearrange room assignments for courses.
