Absence Declaration
ROSI Absence Declaration - Rules for Students in the Faculty of Arts & Science
Requirement
If you are an Arts & Science student who:
- has been absent from class for medical or other unavoidable reasons, and
- requires an accommodation to make up missed work or extend a deadline for a test, assignment or other required part of a course such as a laboratory,
you must complete the Absence Declaration on ROSI to record your absence. Note: the Absence Declaration should not be used to declare absences due to religious observances.
In addition, you must submit proper medical or other documentation if:
- your instructor requires it, or
- you are filing a formal petition for a deferred final exam, withdrawal, etc.
You should attach the printed confirmation of the Absence Declaration to the medical certificate before submitting it to your instructor or College Registrar’s Office.
Further Explanation
The Absence Declaration is necessary for all absences requiring accommodation, but may not be sufficient documentation for a particular instructor. It is necessary but definitely not sufficient documentation for a formal petition.
Instructors may require documentation beyond the Absence Declaration for medical absences, such as the UofT Medical Certificate, or they may require lesser forms of documentation. That is a matter left within their discretion, and they may decide their requirements on an across-the-board or a case-by-case basis, as they see fit.
You should follow your instructor’s requirements, but you must also use the Absence Declaration and record your absences.
If you require further information or explanations, or if your absence is a prolonged one that affects more than one course, you should consult your College Registrar.
