Letters of Permission and Transfer Credit: Procedures

To initiate a Request for a Letter of Permission, you must:

  • Complete the Letter of Permission application completely and accurately.
  • Provide the website address for the course description, if known, for each course listed. If a website address is not available, you are responsible for emailing a scanned copy of the course description/syllabus to tcs.artsci@utoronto.ca.
  • To submit in person or by mail:
    • Transfer Credit Section
      Room 1006, Sidney Smith Hall
      100 St. George St.
      Toronto, ON M5S 3G3
  • A separate application must be completed for:
    • each university to which you wish to apply;
    • each session during which you wish to study at another university;
    • any courses in excess of six full credits;
    • any revisions or additions to your original course selections (an Addendum).
  • A non-refundable fee of $40.00 (effective May 1, 2015) is charged for each Request for a Letter of Permission or for each set of six full-course equivalents listed on the form (e.g. six full-courses, twelve half-courses or a combination thereof totalling six full-credits).
  • The completed Request, including website address for course descriptions and payment, is submitted online to the Transfer Credit Section for processing. [N.B. Previous Letters of Permission must be resolved prior to the assessment of any new requests.]
  • Upon submission of a Request online, students will receive a confirmation email.
  • Requests for Letters of Permission may take two to three weeks to process from the date of their receipt by the Transfer Credit Section. The length of time may vary, however, depending on the nature of the request (e.g. number of courses, type of courses, completeness of documentation) and the time of year (e.g. March through September are particularly busy months).
  • Upon completion of the assessment, an email notification will be sent with instructions on how to view your letter on-line. All correspondence from this office will be sent to the utoronto email address you provided on your application. Please ensure that you check your email regularly.
  • Letters of Permission are sent directly to the students. Students are responsible for sending a copy of the Letter of Permission directly to the host university. For select institutions outside of Canada and the United States, a Conditional Post-admission Transfer Credit (if approved) is issued to the student for personal reference.
  • The Transfer Credit Section must be notified immediately in writing if, for any reason, the student decides not to use the Letter of Permission.
  • The granting of a Letter of Permission request does not guarantee access to course(s) offered at the host institution since access may be restricted by other factors (e.g. priority given to degree students at the host university, class size, prerequisites, etc.) Students are advised, therefore, to contact the Registrar's Office at the host university for further details concerning course enrolments, registration, etc.
  • A Conditional Post-admission Transfer Credit or a Letter of Permission does not imply acknowledgement of a relationship between the host institution and the University of Toronto.

To initiate a Request for Transfer Credit (Post-Admission), you must:

  • Complete the Transfer Credit application completely and accurately
  • Provide the website address for the course description, if known, for each course listed. If a website address is not available, you are responsible for emailing a scanned copy of the course description/syllabus to tcs.artsci@utoronto.ca.  To submit in person or by mail:
    • Transfer Credit Section
      Room 1006, Sidney Smith Hall

      Toronto, ON M5S 3G3
  • A separate application must be completed for each university at which you have studied.
  • A non-refundable fee of $25 is charged for each institution attended.
  • The completed request, including website address for course descriptions and payment, is submitted online to the Transfer Credit Section for processing. [N.B. Previous Letters of Permission must be resolved prior to the assessment of any new requests.]
  • Upon submission of a Request online, students will receive a confirmation email.
  • Arrange to have an official transcript sent directly to the Transfer Credit Section for inclusion with your Request . [The Request cannot be processed until the official transcript has been received].
  • Once the assessment of your eligibility for transfer credit and of the course(s) has been completed, an email notification will be sent with instructions on how to view your letter on-line. All correspondence from this office will be sent to the utoronto email address you provided on your application. Please ensure that you check your email regularly. Processing time may vary depending on the complexity of the request and the time of year.

NB: In some cases, the assessment of transfer credit may be deferred until after the completion of the course(s) in question (e.g. language course, studio courses). You may be asked to contact the departmental advisor to present a portfolio of your studies, arrange a placement test and/or an interview to review the course content.
