Alessandri Scholarship in Ibero-American Studies
  • Established through a generous donation from Dr. and Mrs. H. Kalant.
  • (For Any Year) - Awarded to a student enrolled in a Specialist or Major Program offered by the Department of Spanish and Portuguese who has completed LAS 200Y1.

 

CIRV FM Prize in Portuguese
  • Established through a generous annual gift from Mr. Frank Alvarez, President, CIRV FM, Toronto.
  • (For Any Year) - Awarded to a student enrolled in a Specialist or Major Program in Portuguese.

 

Department of Spanish and Portuguese Prize in Portuguese
  • Established by the Department of Spanish and Portuguese.
  • (For Any Year) - Awarded to a student enrolled in a Specialist or Major Program in Portuguese.

 

Doris May Barker Scholarship
  • Established by Mr. John Barker Davies of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, his friends and associates.
  • (For Any Year) - Student who has completed two full course equivalents in Spanish at the 200 level or higher and who intends to pursue a program of study and travel in a winter or summer session in a Spanish-speaking country. Preference will be given to students who have not previously won the Buchanan Scholarship, and to students who are enrolled in a Specialist or Major program in Spanish. Apply to the Department of Spanish and Portuguese by April 1.

Gaspar Otálora Memorial Prize in Spanish
  • Established through the generous donations from the friends and colleagues of the late Mr. Gaspar Otálora.
  • (For Any Year) - Student in a Specialist or Major program offered by the Department of Spanish and Portuguese who has completed SPA 423Y1. If SPA 423Y1 is not offered, the award will be made to a student who has completed SPA 420H1.

 

Gordon Patterson Prize
  • Established through of a gift of Mr. Lawrence F. Patterson in memory of his father, Professor G.C. Patterson, M.C., B.A., who was killed in the Brockville train crash in 1959.  Professor Patterson of the (then) Department of Italian, Spanish and Portuguese was admired as a sound scholar, a dedicated teacher, and above all as a man of outstanding decency, uprightness and integrity of character.  He was decorated with the Military Cross for his gallantry at Vimy Ridge.
  • (For Any Year) - Awarded to a student enrolled in a Specialist or Major Program offered by the Department of Spanish and Portuguese who has completed SPA 100Y1.

 

Hermann Fischer and Enid Levy Prize in Latin American Studies
  • Established by Professor K.L. Levy, Department of Hispanic Studies, in memory of the late Hermann Fischer, Ph.D., Professor of Chemistry (1937-1947), under whose direction brilliant work was continued on the synthesis of natural compounds of physiological importance.  He later became Professor of Synthetic Chemistry Related to Medicine in the Banting and Best Department of Medical Research, and died in 1960 while Professor Emeritus of Biochemistry, University of California.  An authority in the field of carbohydrates and fats, he was the son of the celebrated Emil Fischer (1852-1919), considered the greatest organic chemist of his time (Nobel Prize, 1902).  Both Dr. Fischer and Enid Levy were instrumental in shaping the career of the donor of this award.

Kurt Levy Family Latin American Studies Travel Grant
  • Established through a generous donation from Professor and Mrs. Kurt Levy.
  • (For Any Year) - Student in a Specialist or Major program offered by the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, or the Major program in Ibero-American Studies. The grant is to subsidize travel and accommodation for students who intend to complete a program of study in a Latin American country during the academic year. Awarded every other year. Apply to the Department of Spanish and Portuguese by April 1.

 

Milton A. Buchanan Scholarship in Spanish and Portuguese
  • Established by the Estate of the late Professor Milton A. Buchanan, Professor Emeritus and the former Chairman of the Department of Italian, Spanish and Portuguese.
  • (For Year II) - Student spending one or two terms at a university in Spain, Portugal or Latin America. Student Exchange Program, Self-Designed Program and Woodsworth College Summer Programs are eligible. Applicants must have completed at least two full course equivalents in Spanish and/or Portuguese with a B average or better. Apply to the Department of Spanish and Portuguese by April 1.

 

Peter Bell Prize
  • Established by the colleagues of the late Peter Breckenridge Bell, M.A., former instructor in the Department of Italian and Hispanic Studies.
  • (For Any Year) - Awarded to a student enrolled in a Specialist or Major Program offered by the Department of Spanish and Portuguese who has completed SPA 220Y1.

 

Portuguese-Canadian Cultural Alliance Prize
  • Established through a joint donation by a Professor Emeritus and a friend of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese.
  • (For Any Year) - Awarded to a student who has completed PRT 100Y1.

 

Spanish Prizes
  • Established by the Department of Spanish and Portuguese.
  • (For Any Year) - Students in a Specialist or Major program offered by the Department of Spanish and Portuguese who have completed 1) SPA 220Y1; 2) SPA 320Y1; 3) SPA 420H1.

 

Summer Course Prizes in Spanish and Portuguese
  • Established by the Department of Spanish and Portuguese.
  • (For Any Year) - 1) Student in a 100 level Spanish course; 2) Student in a 200, 300 or 400 level Spanish course; 3) Student in a Portuguese course.

 

William Robert Phillips Memorial Scholarship
  • Established by Professor M.J. Phillips of the Department of Chemical Engineering, in memory of her father, William Robert Phillips.
  • (For Any Year) - One or more students in a Specialist or Major program in Spanish.
