Undergraduate Scholarships: Centre for Jewish Studies

Abraham Isaac Silver Scholarship
  • Established through a generous donation from the Estate of the late Abraham Isaac Silver.
  • (For Any Year) - Awarded to a student who has been accepted for the International Summer Program in Jerusalem.  If the Jerusalem Program is not offered, awarded to a student enrolled in a Program in Jewish Studies.

 

Anshel Wise Scholarship
  • Established through the generous donations of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Sharpe, Dr. and Mrs. Sydney Wise, Dr. and Mrs. David K. Wise, and Dr. and Mrs. Isadore Tepperman.
  • (For Any Year) - Awarded to a student with a Grade ‘A’ standing in one or more of the courses listed in the Jewish Studies Program brochure.  Preference will be given to students who are enrolled in the Specialist or Major Program in Jewish Studies.

 

Bebe and Samuel Ciglen Student Award
  • Established through the generous donations of the family and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Ciglen.
  • (For Any Year – Non-Graduating) - Student with a high mark in one or more courses in Jewish Studies (the relevant courses are listed in the Arts and Science Calendar under Jewish Studies). Preference will be given to students enrolled in a Jewish Studies program.

 

Ben Kayfetz Scholarship
  • Established through the generous donation of the friends and colleagues of Mr. Ben Kayfetz.
  • (For Any Year – Non-Graduating) - Student with a high mark in one or more courses in Jewish Studies (the relevant courses are listed in the Arts and Science Calendar under Jewish Studies). Preference will be given to students enrolled in a Jewish Studies program.

Director's Merit Award in Jewish Studies

  • Established by the Anne Tanenbaum Centre for Jewish Studies
  • To be awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student based on academic merit at the discretion of the Director for the Centre for Jewish Studies

 

Dr. Fred Weinberg Memorial Scholarship in Jewish Studies
  • Established through the generous donations from the friends and family of Dr. Fred Weinberg.
  • (For Any Year) - Student enrolled in a specialist or Major Program in Jewish studies on the basis of financial need. Academic merit will also be considered.

 

E. G. Clarke Scholarship in Biblical Hebrew

  • Established through a generous donation from Mary and Ted Lutz, a former student and colleague.
  • (For Any Year) - Student who has completed Introductory Biblical Hebrew (currently NML250Y1).

 

Gerald W. Schwartz Scholarship in Israeli Studies 
  • Established through the generous donations from the friends of Gerald Schwartz, in recognition of his commitment to the study and understanding of Israel.
  • (For Any Year) - Awarded to an undergraduate student(s) enrolled in courses associated with the Andrea and Charles Bronfman Chair in Israeli Studies.

 

Herschel William Gryfe Memorial Award in Jewish History 
  • Established through a generous donation from Mr. & Mrs. Arthur Gryfe.

 

Kideckel Robbins/Harry & Sarah (Sadie) Kideckel Memorial Scholarship in Jewish Studies
  • Established by Marsha Kideckel and Larry Robbins.
  • Awarded to an outstanding undergraduate student enrolled in a program in the Centre for Jewish Studies on the basis of academic merit.

Kornberg-Jezierski Family Memorial Essay Prize in Holocaust Studies
  • Established by Jacques Kornberg.
  • (For Any Year) - To be awarded to an outstanding student essay (graduate or undergraduate) in Holocaust Studies written for a U of T course or under a U of T faculty member's supervision during the current academic session. Applications should be made to the Jewish Studies Program office.

 

Mitzi Burke Scholarship in Jewish Studies
  • Established through a generous gift of the family of the late Mitzi Burke.
  • (For Any Year) - Awarded to an outstanding student enrolled in a Specialist or Major Program in Jewish Studies.

 

Samuel Cukier Memorial Prize
  • Established through the generous donation of Mrs. Felicia and Professor Judith Cukier.
  • (For Any Year) - Awarded to an outstanding student enrolled in the Specialist or Major Program in Jewish Studies.

 

Shiff Family Undergraduate Enhancement Award
  • (For Any Year) - To be awarded to undergraduate students in the Centre for Jewish Studies on the basis of academic merit.

 

 Sonny Altman Memorial Scholarship Fund

  • Established by Earl Altman, Cheryl Altman and Helen Altman.
  • (For Year IV) - To be awarded to a fourth year student each year within the field of Jewish Studies who has been accepted into the MA program in Jewish Studies, or been accepted into the Faculty of Education at the University of Toronto. The selected recipient shall demonstrate academic merit, outstanding contribution with volunteer involvement in the general and/or Jewish community and is in need of financial assistance.

 

Tanenbaum Scholarships in Jewish Studies

  • Established by the Tanenbaum Enhancement Fund.
  • (For any year) - To be awarded to outstanding students enrolled in a program in the Centre for Jewish Studies for the purpose of research or other academic endeavours.


Tikvah Fund Scholarship in Jewish Studies

 Established through a generous annual donation from The Tikvah Fund.

  • (For Any Year/Grad) - Awarded to outstanding students enrolled in a Program in the Centre for Jewish Studies with concentration on Jewish thought.

 

Upper Canada Lodge B'nai Brith Scholarship in Canadian Jewish Studies
  • Established through a gift of the Upper Canada Lodge, B’Nai Brith, in honour of the 75th Anniversary of the Lodge, 1919-1994.
  • (For Any Year) - Awarded to an outstanding student in the area of Canadian Jewish Studies.  If no suitable candidate can be found in the area of Canadian Jewish Studies, the scholarship may be awarded to an outstanding student in another area of Jewish Studies.
