Undergraduate Scholarships: Earth Sciences

Alexander MacLean Scholarship
  • Established through the donations of the graduates of the University of Toronto and other friends of Professor Alexander MacLean.
  • (For Any Year) - Student who has completed ESS322H. Students enrolled in the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering are also eligible to receive the award.

Coleman Gold Medal in Geology

  •  Established through the donations of the former students, colleagues, and friends of the late Professor A.P. Coleman, M.A., M.Sc., Ph.D., LL.D., D.Sc., F.R.S., Professor Emeritus of Geology.
  • Graduating student who has completed one of the Specialist programs offered by the Department of Earth Sciences. The recipient will also receive the Wesley Tate Scholarship.
 

 Daniela and Alexander Tintor Undergraduate Scholarship

  • Established through a generous donation from Nick Tintor.
  •  (For Any Year) - Awarded to an undergraduate student in the geosciences based on academic merit.  Financial need may also be considered.

 

Daniel Wilson Scholarship in Science

  • Established through a bequest of the late William Christie, Esq. in honour of Sir Daniel Wilson, Kt., LL.D., F.R.S., President of the University College, 1890-1892, President of the University 1889-1892.
  • (For Year III) - Student in a program offered by the Department of Earth Sciences.
 
Don Salt Scholarship
  • Established by the Canadian Exploration Geophysical Society.
  •  (For Year III/IV) - Student in the Specialist program in Geology, Geology and Physics, or Physics (with a concentration in Geophysics). Apply to the Department of Earth Sciences by March 1.
 
Dr. E. T. Tozer Scholarship in (Triassic) Stratigraphy/ Palaeontology
  • (For Any Year) - To be awarded to an undergraduate student in the Department of Earth Sciences studying (Triassic) Stratigraphy/ Palaeontology, based on academic merit. Financial need will also be considered.

 

Ed Spooner Undergraduate Scholarship in Mineral Deposits Geology/Exploration

  • Established by various donors in honour of Professor Ed Spooner
  • Awarded to a full-time undergraduate student taking the course ESS 423 (Mineral Deposits) or its future equivalent for credit. Open to students across all three U of T campuses and international students.
  • Applications must be submitted to the Department of Earth Sciences by the third week after the start of the course in any given year. Please contact the department for more information.


Edward Blake Scholarship

  • Established through a gift of the late Hon. Edward Blake, Chancellor of the University, 1876-1900.
  • (For Year II/III) - The award will rotate on an annual basis between the Department of Geography and Earth Sciences.  In Earth Sciences, it will be awarded to a second year student enrolled in a program offered by the Department of Earth Sciences.
 

 Frederick W. Schumacher Scholarship in Geology

  • Established by the Estate of the late Frederick W. Schumacher.
  •  (For Any Year) - Student in the Specialist program in Geology or the Geological Engineering program of the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering. The award will alternate on an annual basis between the two Faculties.
 
Garnet W. McKee-Lachlan Gilchrist Scholarship
  • Established through a bequest of the late Garnet W. McKee and supported by gifts of various donors contributed through the late Lachlan Gilchrist, M.A., Ph.D., F.R.S.C., Professor Emeritus of Geophysics and a contribution by the Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines, Ltd.
  • (For Any Year) - Awarded to student enrolled in the Specialist Program in Geophysics. If there is no eligible candidate, awarded to a student enrolled in 300/400 series courses in Earth Sciences and Physics (including joint courses).
 
H. V. Ellsworth Undergraduate Award in Mineralogy
  • Established through a bequest of the late Mabel J. Ellsworth in memory of her husband Hardy Vincent Ellsworth, M.A., Ph.D.
  •  (For Any Year) - It is awarded to a student enrolled in a program offered by the Department of Earth Sciences with a demonstrated interest in the general field of Mineralogy.
 

 James P. Nowlan Explorers Fund Undergraduate Scholarship

  • Established by the Estate of James P. Nowlan.
  • Awarded to an undergraduate student in the geosciences based on academic merit. Financial need will also be considered.
 
Joubin James Scholarship and Prize
  • Established through the generous donations of various donors.
  • (For Year II) - It is to be awarded to a student registered in an Earth Sciences POSt who has completed his/her second year of study in Science in the Faculty of Arts & Science.  It is awarded on the basis of academic merit and contribution to the academic program through extracurricular activities.  The remainder of the yearly endowment payout is to be directed, in memory of Mathew Shawn McConville, to prizes for high school students participating in regional and/or national science fairs.
 
Nicholas Wemyss Undergraduate Explorers Fund Award
  • Established by Nicholas Wemyss, who graduated with a B.Sc. degree in Geology from the U of T in 1978. He has over 25 years of successful exploration experience. In the early 1980s, he participated in the discovery and development of the Puce Coupe Boundary oilfield, a 16 million barrel light oilfield located northwest of Grand Prairie, Alberta. In the late 1980s at Canadian Hunter Exploration Ltd. Mr. Wemyss led the team that discovered and developed the Ringer Border field in northeast British Columbia and northwest Alberta. Both discoveries were recognized by Oilweek magazine – the Pouce Coupe field was named the eighth largest Western Canadian oil discovery of the 1980s; Ring-Border was cited as the second largest gasfield.
  • (For Any Year) - Awarded to an undergraduate student in the geosciences based on academic merit.
 

 Roger E. Deane Memorial Scholarship in Geology

  • Established through donations from the relatives, friends, colleagues, and students of the late Roger E. Deane, B.A.Sc., Ph.D., and Associate Professor of the Department of Geology.
  • (For Year III) - To be awarded to students who have completed the departmental geological field camp at Whitefish Falls.  Students enrolled in the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering who are also eligible to receive the award (normally taken during the summer).
 

Undergraduate Explorers Fund Award

  •  Established through the generous donations of alumni and friends of the Department of Geology.
  • To be awarded to an undergraduate student in the Department of Geology based on academic merit. Financial need will be considered.
 
Wesley Tate Scholarship in Geology
  • Established by the Estate of the late Wesley Tate.
  • (For Year IV) - To be awarded to a fourth-year student graduating as a Geology Specialist or from such other similar programmes as may be established from time to time and in which Geology is a Major subject.  The award shall be made to the student obtaining the highest average standing in the Geology courses of his fourth year, providing he has obtained Grade A standing in the work of his final year.  The winner of this scholarship will also receive the Coleman Gold Medal.
