Undergraduate Scholarships: Chemistry

Canadian Society for Chemistry Silver Medal
  • Established by the Canadian Society for Chemistry.
  • (For Year III) - Awarded to an outstanding student in the Specialist Program in Chemistry with an A average.

 

ChemClub Undergraduate Summer Research Scholarship
  • Established by the ChemClub.
  • (For Year II/III) - Awarded to a second or third year undergraduate on the basis of financial need.  Preference will be given to students with a minimum 75% average.  Recipients must present their research work at the summer student poster session (or, if no poster session occurs, a one-page report detailing their summer work must be submitted The ChemClub).  The recipient does not need to be enrolled in the Chemistry Specialist Program.  No previous research experience is required; rather, preference will be given to students who have never performed laboratory research. Apply to the Department of Chemistry by January 6.

 

Daniel Wilson Scholarship in Science
  • Established through a bequest of the late William Christie, Esq. in honour of Sir Daniel Wilson, Kt., LL.D., F.R.S., President of the University College, 1890-1892, President of the University 1889-1892.
  • (For Year III) - Awarded to a third year student enrolled in a program offered by the Department of Chemistry.

 

David H. Farrar Scholarship in Chemistry
  • Established through the generous donations from the friends, students, and colleagues of Professor David H. Farrar.
  • (For Any Year) - To be awarded to undergraduate and/or graduate student(s) in the Department of Chemistry who have distinguished themselves both academically and for their leadership and contribution to the life of the University through student governance, community service or volunteer work.

 

David L. Coffen Memorial Scholarship in Organic Chemistry
  • Established through donations from Mrs. Charlotte A. Coffen and friends and family of Dr. David L. Coffen.
  • (For Year III) - Student enrolled in a program offered by the Department of Chemistry who has an emphasis in organic chemistry. Preference will be given to students who have applied to take CHM 449Y.

David McLaren Scholarship in Chemistry
  • Established through a bequest of the late Nellie Myrtle McLaren.
  • (For Year III) - Awarded to one or more outstanding students in Specialist Program in Chemistry or Biological Chemistry.

 

Dorothy Whiting Scholarship in Chemistry
  • Established through a bequest from the Estate of the late Dorothy Whiting.
  • (For Year II/III) - Outstanding students in the Specialist Program in Biology Chemistry.

 

DuPont Canada Inc. Summer Research Scholarships
  • Established by DuPont Canada Inc.
  • (For Year I/II/III) - Students who will spend at least three months in the laboratory of the participating faculty member. Apply to the Department of Chemistry by January 6.

 

Edward Blake Scholarship in Physical Sciences
  • Established through a gift of the late Hon. Edward Blake, Chancellor of the University, 1876-1900.
  • (For Year II) - Awarded to a second year student enrolled in a program offered by the Department of Chemistry who has completed three full course equivalents in Chemistry or in Chemistry and Physics.  The recipient will also win the Henry Myron Marshack Memorial Prize in Chemistry or in Physics and Chemistry.

 

F. E. Beamish Scholarship in Chemistry
  • Established through gifts from the colleagues, friends, and former students of the late Professor F. E. Beamish, M.A., B.Sc., F.R.S.C., former Professor Emeritus of Chemistry.
  • (For Year II) - An outstanding student whose programme includes at least three 300 level or higher courses in Chemistry.

 

Frank B. Kenrick Scholarship in Chemistry
  • Established through a bequest from the late Mrs. F.B. Kenrick, widow of Frank Boteler Kenrick, M.A., Ph.D., F.R.S.C., Professor Emeritus, and Department of Chemistry.
  • (For Year III) - An outstanding student in the Specialist Program in Chemistry of Chemical Physics.

 

Henry Myron Marshack Memorial Prize in Chemistry or in Physics and Chemistry
  • Established by Mrs. H.M. Schwartz in memory of her late husband, Henry Myron Marshack of Toronto, scientist, author, musician, industrialist, former editor of the Springfield (Mass.) Times.
  • (For Year II) - An outstanding student whose program in 2nd year includes at least three full course equivalents in Chemistry or in Chemistry and Physics.  The recipient will also receive the Edward Blake Scholarship in Physical Sciences.

 

Hypercube Prize in Chemistry
  • Established by Hypercube Inc.
  • (For Year IV) - An outstanding graduating student in a Specialist Program in Chemistry who intends to pursue graduate work.  Proof of acceptance into a recognized graduate program in Chemistry is required.

 

Ivan Szak Prize in Chemistry
  • Established by Mr. Ivan Szak.
  • (For Year IV) - Awarded to the graduate with the highest cumulative GPA in the Specialist Program in Chemistry.

 

Ivan Szak Scholarship in Chemistry
  • Established by Mr. Ivan Szak.
  • (For Year III) - To two outstanding students who have completed the required courses of the Third Year of the Specialist Programs in Chemistry of Chemical Physics with a minimum ‘A’ average in these courses.

 

L. V. Redman Prizes in Chemistry
  • Established through a bequest of the late Lawrence Vincent Redman B.A. (1920), Hon. D.Sc. (1931).
  • (For Year I) - Awarded to students enrolled in a Specialist or Major Program offered by the Department of Chemistry who have completed CHM 138H1 + 139H1 or CHM 151Y1.

 

Richard Ivey Foundation Summer Research Experience Scholarships
  • Established by the Richard Ivey Foundation.
  • (For Year I/II/III) - Scholarships will be applied for by students and given on the basis of financial Academic performance will also be considered.  Preference will also be given to students who indicate that they will be pursuing studies in Environmental Chemistry.  Applications will include a transcript of marks for the past year where possible.  The choice will be made by the Chair of Chemistry or his/her designate. Students who will spend at least three months in the laboratory of the participating faculty member. Apply to the Department of Chemistry by January 6.

 

Robert and Jean Hadgraft Scholarship in Chemistry
  • Established by Robert and Jean Hadgraft.
  • (For students entering Year IV) - Awarded to a student in a Specialist Program in Chemistry who has achieved a cumulative GPA in the range of B+/A-.  Financial need must be considered; academic merit will also be considered.

 

Sarah C. Gollop and William G. Gollop Memorial Scholarship in Chemistry
  • Established through a bequest of the late Dame Anna Margaret Brooks, widow of the late George Edwin Gollop.
  • (For Year I/II/III) - An outstanding student in a Specialist Program in Chemistry.  Preference will be given to graduates of North Bend High School, North Bend, Nebraska.

 

Society of Chemical Industry Merit Award in Chemistry
  • Established by the Society of Chemical Industry.
  • (For Year IV) - An outstanding graduating student in a Specialist Program in Chemistry with an A average.

 

University of Toronto Chemistry Club Prize in Chemistry
  • Established through a gift from University of Toronto Chemistry Club.
  • (For Year IV) - To be awarded to a student with the highest mark in 4th year Chemistry research (currently CHM 418Y, 428Y, 439Y, 449Y).

 

Xerox Research Centre of Canada Undergraduate Scholarships
  • Established by Xerox Research Centre of Canada.
  • (For Any Year) - Three awards of equal value to students enrolled in a Chemistry Program on the basis of financial need.  Academic achievement will also be considered.  One of the awards must be given to a student presenting an outstanding 4th year thesis. Apply to the Department of Chemistry by January 6.
