Dr. David Chu Scholarships in Asia Pacific Studies

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Must be an undergraduate or graduate student in the Faculty of Arts and Science who is pursuing study or research related to the Asia Pacific region (east and southeast Asia). Preference will be given according to the following categories, in descending order of priority:
    1. Undergraduate students enrolled in the Contemporary Asian Studies Major or Dr. David Chu Major program in Asia Pacific Studies. Students may apply for either travel or non-travel awards.
    2. Graduate students enrolled in the Collaborative Master’s program in Asia Pacific Studies. Students may apply for either travel or non-travel awards.
    3. Graduate students in programs other than 2 above for whom Asia Pacific studies are a major focus of their studies, and who are traveling to conduct research in the Asia Pacific region.
    4. Undergraduate students in programs other than 1 above for whom Asia Pacific studies are a major focus of their studies, and who are traveling to attend a course of study at a university in the Asia Pacific region. Students must be in their third or fourth year of study; minimum CGPA for consideration is 2.50. Students who meet these criteria and who are attending the Summer Abroad program in Hong Kong are eligible to apply.
  • Financial need will be considered. Undergraduate students must demonstrate financial need by qualifying for OSAP for the fall-winter sessions in which the application is made. Graduate students must demonstrate financial need by qualifying for OSAP or by submitting a Financial Needs Assessment Form for the fall-winter sessions in which the application is made.
  • Please note: international students are not eligible

Value:

  • Travel awards (all categories): To be determined on the basis of estimated costs (see below)
  • Non travel awards: category 1 - $1000, category 2 - $5000
  • Travel awards are paid at the time of travel after students have completed a Safety Abroad Workshop and registered with the Safety Abroad Office (this can take up to one month)
  • Non-travel awards are paid after re-registration in the next fall session at the University of Toronto.

Applications are composed of 6 parts that must be submitted together. Please ensure applications are complete upon submission. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

  1. Application Summary Form
  2. One-page statement outlining the student's program of study and/or research interests.
  3. Curriculum vitae.
  4. Detailed breakdown of estimated costs (travel awards only).
  5. One-page letter of support from a University of Toronto faculty member (must be submitted in a sealed envelope with the application).
  6. Copy of the applicant's OSAP assessment (undergraduate/graduate students) or a Financial Needs Assessment Form (graduate students).

Applicants will be notified of the decision by mail by end of April.
