Recognized Study Groups for First and Second Year Arts & Science Courses

Recognized Study Groups (RSGs) are small groups of three to six students that meet weekly for one to three hours and are facilitated by a RSG Leader. The goal of RSGs is to collaborate on learning course content in a supportive environment. Collaborative learning is an effective strategy that supports academic and social engagement in large first and second year classes.

The group members and the RSG Leader are students currently enrolled in the same course.  The RSG Leader is a student trained in group facilitation and has volunteered their time to help organize the group, locate meeting space and plan weekly activities.  RSG Leaders are not tutors – they are learning along with group members.

Participating in RSGs allow you to:

  • Connect socially with other students
  • Increase understanding of course material
  • Ask questions in a comfortable, non-judgmental environment
  • Keep up with weekly readings
  • Compare class notes
  • Prepare for tests and exams
  • Build leadership and collaborative learning skills
  • Recognize and use available academic support resources
  • Earn a Co-Curricular Record (CCR) credit (participants and leaders)

Are you enrolled in a 3rd or 4th year class and are interested in forming a study group?

We recognize that the need to learn together doesn't just stop because you're an upper year student.

The Sid Smith Commons, a space led by students, for students, offers bookable space for your study group to meet.

The amazing student staff will:

  • give you a tour of the space and demonstrate available technology
  • supply with resources and a study group guide
  • book an on-site learning strategist to support your group to meet its goals
