The Faculty of Arts and Science Outstanding Teaching Awards recognize teaching excellence in undergraduate education, in:
- Classroom Instruction
- Course Design
- Curriculum Development
- Innovative Teaching Methods
Up to four awards will be presented in 2011-12. A nominator may make more than one nomination. The awards will be presented at a reception in the Winter Session, and award-winning faculty will receive a $500.00 prize and a commemorative certificate. Individuals may be nominated for an award any number of times, but may receive an award only once in five years.
Criteria for the Awards
The awards are made on the basis of continuing excellence in undergraduate teaching and other contributions to undergraduate education in the Faculty of Arts and Science (St. George), with a focus upon the immediately-preceding three years. In evaluating nominees, the following criteria are considered:
- excellence in communication skills
- mastery of subject area
- ability to stimulate critical and analytical thinking in students
- ability to stimulate enthusiasm in students
- innovations and creativity in teaching methods, course design, and curriculum development
Eligibility for the Awards
Candidates must hold a continuing appointment at one of the following ranks in the Faculty of Arts and Science (St. George Campus): Associate Professor/Full Professor/Senior Lecturer.
Nomination Procedures
- Candidates may be nominated by students (as individuals, or as groups such as classes or course unions), by staff, and by faculty members.
- There is no standard nominating form. For each nomination, nominators should write a letter addressing the above criteria.
- A nomination package is expected to include course evaluation summary sheets for the past 3 years of teaching, student comments/support, and any other supporting materials relevant to the letter of nomination.
- If the nominators do not have access to course evaluation summary sheets, the Dean’s Office will acquire them from the relevant academic unit(s).
- Nominations from faculty members other than a Chair or Director should include a letter of support from the relevant Chair or Director.
- Students with questions about the nomination process may wish to consult either the Arts and Science Students’ Union (Sidney Smith Hall, Room 1068; 416-978-4903) or the appropriate Chair or Director.
- Academic units will be asked by the Dean’s Office to supply follow-up information, such as the nominees’ CVs, (and course evaluation summary sheets if not included in the original package).
