                  Type 1 Programs

Type 1 Enrolment Period: April 1 to September 20, 2017

Type 1 programs have no enrolment requirements other than successful completion of four full-course equivalents (4.0 FCEs). No application is required. To enrol in a Type 1 program, log on to ACORN at www.acorn.utoronto.ca and select "Programs" from the "Enrol & Manage" menu. In the "Add a Program" box, enter the code or name of the program you want to enrol in. A suggested list of programs will appear as you start typing. Double check that you're selecting the right program - remember that programs from all divisions (not only Arts & Science) will appear on this list based on the search criteria. You can find a complete list of program codes here.

A pop-up box will appear after you select the program; click the "Enrol" button. If your enrolment is successful, ACORN will display the message: "You have successfully added the program [program code] [program name]". The program will appear under Currently Enrolled. Your enrolment in the Type 1 program is now complete.

Type 1S Enrolment Period: July 3 to September 20, 2017

Type 1S programs also do not have requirements for entry other than successful completion of 4.0 FCEs. No application is required. However, enrolment dates differ and students enrolled in these programs pay higher fees. Refer to Academic Fees for Commerce, Computer Science, Bioinformatics & Computational Biology, or Concurrent Teacher Education programs for details on fees.

                  Type 2 Programs

Type 2 programs require a specific course(s) and/or grades for admission. In addition, some Type 2 programs may have a finite number of spaces (check the 2017-2018 Calendar for details and requirements). Check the listings here for these "2L" programs. There are 3 steps to enrolling in a Type 2 program:

                  • Step 1: submit a request on ACORN
                  • Step 2: check ACORN to see if the department has given you an "invitation" to enrol
                  • Step 3: accept the invitation to enrol

There are two request periods for Type 2 programs. If you expect to complete the required courses during the 2016-17 fall/winter session, you should submit your program request during the first request period. If you expect to complete the required courses during the 2017 summer session, you should submit your request during the second request period. Remember that once you have completed 4.0 full-course equivalents, you will not be able to enrol in further courses until you have enrolled in the minimum appropriate combination of programs. While you are waiting for the results of your program requests, you will need to enrol in interim backup program(s) if you want to enrol in courses. If you need help, contact your college registrar's office.

Late requests are not typically accepted by departments; if you miss the deadline for the first request period, you will need to wait until the second period to submit your request.

Step 1: Submit a request on ACORN

Log on to ACORN and select "Programs" from the "Enrol & Manage" menu.

A pop-up box will appear after you select the program; click the "Request to Enrol" button. If your request has been submitted, ACORN will display the message: "You have requested enrolment in the program [program code] [program name]". The program will appear under the "Requested" heading.

You can add requests for as many programs as you wish, but remember—if you are invited to all of them, you can enrol in no more than three, of which only two can be majors and/or specialists. You should only request programs for which you meet the admission requirements (as listed in the the 2017-2018 Calendar).

Step 2: Check results of your requests

Beginning June 30 (first request period) or September 15 (second request period), return to ACORN and select "Programs" from the "Enrol & Manage" menu. If your request is successful and you have been admitted, the program will appear under the "Invited" heading.

If your request is not successful, the program will appear under the "Refused" heading. If a decision has not been made, the program will remain under "Requested". If you have questions regarding the refusal or lack of decision, contact the department/sponsor of the program.

Step 3: Accept invitation to program

If you have been given an "invitation" to enrol in the Type 2 program, it will appear under the "Invited" heading.

To accept the invitation to enrol, click the "Accept" button. A pop-up box will appear; confirm your acceptance by clicking the "Accept" button once more. If the acceptance is successful, ACORN will display the message: "You have accepted the invitation and enrolled in program [program code] [program name]". The program will appear under the "Currently Enrolled" heading. Your enrolment in the Type 2 program is now complete.

To decline the invitation to enrol, click the gear icon next to the "Accept" button and select "Remove program".

The deadline for accepting an invitation is August 2 (first request period) or September 20 (second request period).

                  Type 3 Programs

Type 3 programs require completion of specific course(s), have a finite number of spaces and additional information may be required by the program sponsor. To enrol in Type 3 programs, follow these three steps:

                  • Step 1: apply to the Type 3 program using the Type 3 application form (second round application period has ended)
                  • Step 2: check ACORN to see if the department has given you an "invitation" to enrol
                  • Step 3: accept the invitation to enrol on ACORN

Remember that once you have completed 4.0 full-course equivalents, you will not be able to enrol in further courses until you have enrolled in the minimum appropriate combination of programs. While you are waiting for the results of your program requests, you will need to enrol in interim backup program(s) if you want to enrol in courses. If you need help, contact your college registrar's office.

There are two request periods for Type 3 programs, but some only accept applications in the first request period.

Type 3 programs with a 3 - yes indicator in the listings will be accepting second round applications.

Type 3 programs with a 3 - no indicator in the listings will NOT be accepting formal second round applications; contact the department/sponsor directly for consideration for program enrolment during this time.

DO NOT make requests for Type 3 programs using ACORN—these will not be considered. Only requests made using the Type 3 application form will be considered.

                  Admission with transfer credits?

If you have received 4.0 transfer credits (full-course equivalents) or more, you must enrol in a program within your first session in the Faculty in order to continue your studies.

If you indicated a choice of program on your transfer credit application, the Faculty of Arts & Science will enrol you in a program where possible. If this has been done, your Transfer Credit Assessment will state the program(s) you have been enrolled in. Please note that in some cases you will be enrolled in a major only—you will have to enrol in another major (or two minors) because you are required to enrol in the appropriate combination of programs for your degree. If you don't, you will be prevented from enrolling in courses on ACORN in future sessions.

If you did not indicate a program choice, or noted a broad-based area (e.g. "humanities") on your application for admission, you should enrol in a Type 1 program on ACORN. Information on Type 1 programs can be found above.

If you wish to use a transfer credit to qualify for a Type 2 or 3 program, take your transcript and transfer credit assessment to the department/sponsor offering the program as soon as possible after you've made a request for the program. If you do not do so, your request to enrol in the program will be refused by the department/sponsor. If you do not meet the criteria for enrolment, you should seek counselling at your college registrar's office to review your options.

                  Changing programs

There are some program groupings which allow you to change among the members with no re-application or departmental approval required. For example, if you are enrolled in the specialist in Human Geography, you can switch to the specialist in Environmental Geography, or vice-versa. You can find a listing of Type 2 and 3 program groups that allow this type of changing here. Use the "CHANGE" feature on ACORN to switch amongst members of the same groups. The change option will be available from April 1 to September 20 for Type 2 programs and from July 3 to September 20  for Type 3 programs.

If your program and the one you would like to change to are not in one of the groups here, you must request the new one or contact the appropriate department/sponsor for approval to change.

                  Deleting programs

If you would like to delete a Type 1, 2 or 3 program, you may do so on ACORN by clicking the gear icon in the top right corner of each program listing. You can delete programs during the following time periods:

                  Type 1 – from April 1 to September 20

                  Type 2 - from April 1 to September 20

                  Type 3 – from July 3 to September 20

Focus - from July 3 to September 20

To make deletions outside these dates, contact your college registrar's office. Remember you must enrol in the minimum appropriate combination of programs for your degree or you will be prevented from enrolling in courses on ACORN.
